- Sea floor spreading is the tectonic plate-related condition found when two plates diverge(i.e. move away from each other) . Upwelling magma fills in the fissure left in the gap. As more spread occurs, more magma rises to fill both sides of the fissure. More sea floor is formed. The magnetic domains of iron atoms in magnetite in basalt, orient to the positive magnetic pole ( North Presently)and those orientations are fixed/locked when the magnetite/iron cools below the Curie point regardless of future pole changes. When mapping the sea floor, Navy researchers found that these magnetic domains would lie in one direction then switch to the opposite pole. They also found the these bands were the same for bands equally distant to the ocean mid oceanic ridge on the opposite side. This pattern repeated may times each time resulting in an identical orientation equally distant on the opposite side of the mid-oceanic ridge. (repeated for emphasis) As the mid-oceanic ridge propagation /sea floor spreading is a conveyor belt of continuous basalt production. - Q: We have a hydronic in-floor heating system in a slab subfloor that has an engineered wood floor glued on top without a seperating membrane in between. We like to change now to a tile floor. Trying to take the wood floor up we noticed this to be very piece meal like. That glue does not come off easy and I like to find out if anybody has any knowledge in this. Can I leave the wood floor in and install tile over it or do I lose too much heat? Any suggestions on how to remove the wood floor and glue? What probelms with either way?
- so the radiant heat is in the concrete slab correct? if yes then i would take up the wood flooring, alot of work but will be worth it. I would think you would have a big heat lost leaving the wood floor on, plus how thick the floor would be after putting tile on top of it. To get the glue off try heating it with a large torch if you have access to one or if you know a plumber. I did this taking up a linoleum floor and it came right up easily. heat the glue just until it gets soft then with a scraper or wide putty knife it should come up. are you doing the tile floor yourself? unless are good at it don't you will want to make sure the floor is prep the right way or you will have problems later. plus if you have a tile guy do it you will have a warranty with the job------------good luck with it
- Q: We are trying to repair the kitchen floor in our new house. When we pulled up the linoleum rug (which covered only half the floor), we discovered there was tile below. My husband busted up part of the tile to see if the floor under it matched the hardwood in the rest of the house (including the other half of the kitchen). Apparently the tiles were placed on top of a layer of plaster. There is a wooden floor/subfloor below the plaster but when the tiles and plaster are removed, it leaves the floor uneven with the hardwood by almost an inch. We were going to put down plywood to even the floor and put the new flooring (laminate tiles) on top of that but after checking prices, that's not really feasible for us on our budget. Does anyone have any cheaper solutions?
- if your down to the sub floor, you can put down 1/4 inch backer board on top of the sub floor. then the difference can be made up with the laminate. laminate floor comes in different thicknesses. when you say your husband busted up the tiles, do you mean ceramic tiles? ceramic tiles would be set in a layer of mortar. the laminate does not have to be exactly the same height as the existing wood floor. you can put a transition piece between the new laminate and the existing wood floor. you will put a transition piece between the old and new floor anyway. it's easier if the floors match, but they don't have to be exact. there's molding or thresh hold strips that go between the new and old floor. they come for floors that are even as well as uneven.
