- Vacuum cleaners are used indoors. Therefore it is not advisable to use a gasoline powered vacuum cleaners due to exhaust gases from the engine, too much noise, and etc.

- Well, consider that most dogs don't make the connection between the vacuum cleaner and the fact that you're using it to clean the house. It's just a noisy, scary looking contraption that you turn on once a week and wipe all over the floor, usually shooing them away from the place that they've been resting. Many dogs like vacuum cleaners, but the ones who don't are usually just scared of them because they don't understand them.

- I really like my Bissell Healthy Home. It uses a similar filtering technology to Dyson but at 1/2 the price. HEPA filtration, 5 year warranty, well designed, easy to use tools and a ton of suction. Great on pet hair; I have 4 cats and 3 dogs so I know pet hair. Watch for sales at Lowe's, Sears or Best Buy; you can get it for around $200.

- The okorder /... I believe that Hoover originated the lift off design a few years ago. I've not used this one, but I have seen it kicking around warehouse retailers when was first released. To be honest, I think that the lift off canister design is far more hype than actually useful - regardless of the brand name. The theory of a smaller, portable vacuum is good, no doubt, but having to carry/hold the vacuum in one hand while you operate it with the other kind of defeats the purpose.
