First, I would check the sensors to make sure they are still aligned and that nothing is obstructing them. This happens alot. Usually, you can override the mechanism by holding down the button to close it. If that did not work, check your springs. They're up toward the top above the door where the middle bar brings the door up and down. You may only have one if it is a single garage door. If it is broken it may need to be replaced. Both of my springs have had to be replaced within the last five years. . Last resort, call a garage door company. Be sure to call around for estimates and good luck.

Some require a little more work than others, like reinforcing struts etc. The rule of thumb is - the easier the door woks, the longer the opener is going to last. If you do it yourself, probably under two hundred. If you have professional do it, $300 plus. Buy a good quality one (from a professional) even if you install it your self. Parts are easier to get. If you get one from Lowe's/Home Depot most dealers don't stock parts for those throw-aways.
