- Q: This problem has puzzled me for a long time i always think about why stranded people on islands cant make a proper civilization and i always think it comes down to the ability to work metal. But its not like they could make a steel smelter/furnace out of sand...they would need an older one to use to make the new one...where the hell did the first one come from then????
- originally steel was made by hand- by hammering an iron ingot (easily obtained from turf iron), heating it in coal (allows the carbon to penetrate the iron) then folding it and hammering it again- several hundred times. with each such procedure the iron absorbs more carbon and becomes steel of course steel smelters made this process simpler- but then you can't get damascene steel out of a smelter... the island civilisations could make smelters out of clay. But finding clay or iron ore on a coral island would be a forlorn task
- Q: How are steel coils inspected for camber using laser profiling?
- The inspection of steel coils for camber involves the use of laser profiling, a measurement technique that does not require physical contact. Laser profiling works by emitting a laser beam onto the surface of the steel coil, creating a detailed profile of its surface. To detect camber, the laser profiling system scans the entire length and width of the coil, capturing data points at regular intervals. These data points are then analyzed to determine the deviation from a straight line, indicating the presence of camber. During the inspection process, the measured profile of the steel coil is compared to a reference profile, which represents an ideal or straight surface. The deviation between the measured profile and the reference profile is calculated, and if it exceeds a predetermined threshold, the coil is flagged as having camber. The use of laser profiling offers several advantages for camber inspection of steel coils. Firstly, it eliminates the need for physical contact, reducing the risk of damage. Additionally, laser profiling is highly accurate, capable of detecting even small deviations in the coil's surface. This ensures reliable detection of camber, allowing for necessary corrective actions to be taken. Overall, laser profiling is an efficient and accurate method for inspecting steel coils for camber. It enables manufacturers to maintain high-quality standards and deliver reliable products to customers.
- Q: What are the different methods of levelling steel coils?
- Different methods are employed to level steel coils, depending on their specific requirements and applications. Some commonly used methods include: 1. Roller Leveling: This method utilizes a series of rollers to apply pressure on the steel coil, effectively reducing residual stresses and eliminating any waviness or curvature. It is commonly used for achieving high flatness in thinner gauge coils. 2. Stretch Leveling: In this method, the steel coil is stretched beyond its yield point to eliminate shape defects. The coil is subjected to tension in a stretcher leveler machine, which elongates the material and removes inherent stresses. It is often used for achieving greater flatness in thicker gauge coils. 3. Temper Milling: This method involves passing the steel coil through a temper mill equipped with work rolls on top and bottom. The temper mill applies tension to the coil, flattening it and improving its shape and surface quality. It is typically used for higher strength steel grades. 4. Corrective Leveling: When the steel coil exhibits significant shape defects like wavy edges or center buckles, corrective leveling is employed. This method selectively removes material from specific areas of the coil to achieve a flat and uniform surface. Laser or plasma cutting machines are often used for this process. 5. Tension Leveling: Similar to stretch leveling, tension leveling applies tension to the coil without exceeding its yield point. Bridle rolls are used to stretch the material, eliminating internal stresses and leveling the coil. It is commonly used for achieving flatness in higher strength and thinner gauge coils. These methods can be used individually or in combination, depending on the specific requirements and desired end product. Each method has its advantages and limitations, and the choice of leveling method depends on factors such as coil thickness, material properties, and desired flatness.
- Q: What processes and materials are used in the production of chrome steel
- well, save up some more $$. I wouldnt feel safe on a $120 mountain bike. My advice would be to invest in something that's a little more money. Also, why do you want a steel frame? Aluminum frames today are made from 7005 alloy, and stack up very well compared to the durability of steel. Plus, they wiegh alot less. Nowadays, youll only find steel on a cheap walmart bike, ir a top notch downhill bike made for extream offf road conditions.
- Q: What are the various surface finishes available for steel coils?
- There are several surface finishes available for steel coils, each with its own unique properties and applications. Some of the most commonly used surface finishes for steel coils include: 1. Hot rolled: This finish is achieved by rolling the steel at high temperatures, which creates a rough, scale-like surface. Hot rolled coils are typically used for structural applications, such as construction materials and industrial machinery. 2. Cold rolled: In contrast to hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils are rolled at room temperature, resulting in a smoother and more refined surface. Cold rolled steel is often used in automotive and appliance manufacturing due to its superior surface finish and dimensional accuracy. 3. Galvanized: Galvanizing is a process that involves coating steel with a layer of zinc to protect it from corrosion. Galvanized steel coils have a shiny, metallic appearance and provide excellent corrosion resistance, making them suitable for outdoor applications, such as roofing, fences, and gutters. 4. Electro-galvanized: Similar to galvanized steel, electro-galvanized coils are also coated with a layer of zinc. However, the coating thickness is typically thinner and achieved through an electroplating process. Electro-galvanized steel coils offer good corrosion resistance and are commonly used in the manufacturing of electrical appliances, automotive parts, and construction components. 5. Pre-painted: Pre-painted steel coils are coated with a layer of paint or polymer film on the surface. This finish provides both protection against corrosion and aesthetic appeal, allowing for a wide range of color options. Pre-painted steel coils are extensively used in the construction industry for applications like roofing, cladding, and wall panels. 6. Stainless steel: While not technically a surface finish, stainless steel coils have their own unique properties that make them suitable for various applications. Stainless steel coils are highly resistant to corrosion, heat, and chemical damage, making them ideal for industries such as food processing, medical equipment, and marine applications. These are just a few examples of the various surface finishes available for steel coils. The choice of finish depends on factors such as the intended application, desired appearance, and level of corrosion resistance required.
- Q: Where can a find a steel scrubber. Its great to clean cooking vessels. Would be great if someone gives me an idea. I did not find it at CVS, but was in a hurry, will try again tomorrow.
- I posted this earlier to a similar question... Really burnt on gunk in the bottom like milk or blackened food can easily be cleaned out of stainless steel pots and pans by sprinkling baking soda in the bottom, covering with vinegar, let simmer with a little water for 5 min. Let cool, scrub out with a vinyl scrubby. or I use a lot of stainless steel for cooking and over the years have found a very inexpensive solution to cleaning them especially the ones with burnt food stuck at the bottom. I use Used fabric softner sheets (sheets that i have already used in the dryer for my clothes) and have them soak in water in the dirty pan overnight. Next morning i use the same sheet as scrubber to clean the pan and all the burnt food comes off easily leaving a new look to the pan. Try it this works.
