Q: i want to put some cement in my backyard for a basketball court, is it really expensive, and about how much is it per ft.?
It really depends on the depth of the cement. If you have want it just to play basketball the 3 inches would be perfect, howver if there are harsh weather conditions where you live then you might want to make it 4 inches. It can be expensive depending on if you are going to do it yourself or if you are going to pay some one to do it. ALso if you are going to order the cement from the company or if you are going to mix it yourself. If you pay someone it will cost you about $1500 (3 inches high for 6 yards( price may vary according to your state), it might be as high as $3000 (4 inches in depth (from dirt-surface of cement)). If you do it yourself but you order the mix from a company-->>$600-800 -- about $120 per yard(plus the labor (if you do it yourself you will still need at least 2 more people to help you since 6 yards is a lot.) If you buy the concrete mix bags from home depot you would need about 60-80 bags they are about $5 each. Then also if you intend to do it yourself you would need a lot of tools and buying them would be worse than paying someone to do it. If I were you I would just pay someone to do it 3 inches in depth. If you intend to put cars It must be at least 6 inches deep.
Q: I'm reading about this because I'm considering it but there is information as well that says it's no good. What is the truth about it?
Due to the pumice used, Ancient Roman concrete was a hydraulic cement and those structures are still standing. Ancient Chinese concrete was also a hydraulic cement due to the sticky rice used and those structures are proving difficult to demolish with modern equipment plus the sticky rice makes them ductile so they flex with Earthquakes. Ancient Chinese ships often used cement to strengthen wood which may be why they are reported to have made wooden ships as large as 400 feet long when the longest relatively modern wooden ship in the west was about 200 feet and required iron bracing. The BP well that leaked in the Gulf was finally sealed with hydraulic cement. Make sure you know how to prepare and cure the cement properly.
Q: is there a sealer product for a diy person...or what else is available... it is a laundry room in the basement in a 40 yr. old raised ranch house..no water problems...the surface has small pitting in one area..we have considered flash coating and vinyl flooring and click flooring tiles...looking for a diy solution....
I would apply a thick coat of self-leveling flooring cement/ flooring compound. There are quite a few different types but basically you just mix it up and skim the surface with it until it is fully covered and any low areas filled. It literally levels the surface ready for carpet of other flooring. You can get cement based latex or epoxy resin types. Sika Latex Self Levelling is one product commonly used by DIY's where I live
Q: I am installing chainlinnk fence 4' high and I am traying to figure how much cement is needed per post? I am putting them about 15quot; deep.
The posts should have about 2' in the ground. For a 4' fence, I usually use one 80lbs bag per post.
Q: Is cement heavier when it's wet or when it's dry?Say, i have enough cement to make one cement block, would it be heavier when it's wet or when it dries into the block. Or would it weigh the same amount?(just wondering, sorry if the question seems kind of dumb)
I am assuming you are referring to the weight of a quantity of cement mixed with the requisite water for molding (and not hardened) vs that same cement once it is in a fully cured (hardened) condition. When cement hardens (cures) it does not lose all the water which was originally mixed with it, some of the water remains permanently incorporated into the cement. This is because the active ingredient in dry (as purchased) cement is primarily anhydrous calcium silicate*. When the cement cures and dries out it is in the form of a hydrate of calcium silicate and this portion of the water stays in the cement forever. When we mix cement with enough water so it can be poured or molded, we are adding more than the exact amount of water necessary for the hydration process, so, some, but not all, the water evaporates and thus, the wet cement would be heavier than hardened cement. *Yes, there is sand, gravel, etc but these are just fillers, they just go along for the ride, they do not under go any chemical change during the process.
Q: How long till rubber cement sets?
Rubber cement is actually rubber in a solvent. As the solvent evaporates out, the rubber thickens more and more until it is hard. So, it varies, according to how much of the rubber cement is exposed to air so the solvent can evaporate. It works so well on paper and other things like paper because paper is porous. The paper is like nothing is there to prevent the solvent from evaporating. It will take forever to cement hard plastic since plastic is not porous and the solvent can only get out at the small edges that are uncovered. Nail polish is the same kind of dissolved solid, that hardens as the solvent evaporates out. In nail polish, the solvent is acetone, which is what is mainly in nail polish remover. Rubber cement also has a thinner available for when your can of rubber cement gets too thick.
Q: coal fly ash % used in cement?
If you are specifying a very smooth finish you should limit it to 10% because the finishers will have difficulty because the concrete will tend to stick to the trowel.
Q: I want to do a flooring of my new house by Cement:Sand (1:3)ratio and would like to know the quantity of cement needed per square meter for plastering. The floor thickness will be 2~3mm.
You need to calculate the volume of your floor Assume a 1 square meter area and assume the thickness is .3 mm (not .2) The volume would then be = 0.0003 m x 1 m x 1m = 0.0003 cubic meters Volumetricly, you need 1/4 part concrete + 3/4 parts sand to equal 0.0003 cubic meters. The concrete volume would then be 0.000075 cubic meters concrete per 1 square meter of floor (at .3 mm thickness).... or 75 cubic centimeters per sq meter The density of Portland cement is about 3 g per cubic centimeter therefore 3 g/cm3 * 75 cm3 = 225 grams or 0.225 kg of cement per square meter of floor
Q: CURRENTLY HAVE LINOLEUM FLOOR HE SAID TO LAY CEMENT BOARD OVER THAT?? ALSO HAVE BASEMENT BATH (ON CONCRETE SLAB) SAID TO LAY TILE RIGHT OVER LINOLEUM W/ NO CEMENT BOARD
Use a product called Schlueter Ditra. Most tile installers should know about it. It is a special tile underlayment that is about 1/8 thick and stuck with thinset mortar to your floor be it cement or a wood subfloor. Should be able to purchase it from anyone that sells ceramic tile.
Q: how do you resurface cement steps?
First check the quality of the cement, it may be inferior to construction standards. When you determine it is good, then you need to rough up the surface with a tool like a chisel to give the new surface a grip. Mix a screened sand with some portland at a 2 to 1 mix and trowel it on with a steel finishing trowel
