Q: my tiles i am using are 13 inch, and i am doing a 4x8 wall,so i was wondering which is the best way to adhere it
The adhesive will vary with the type of substrate your tiling over. If your going over drywall in a NON wet area, you can use a mastic(easier to work with for a novice) or a thin set ( much cheaper). But if your doing a wet area such as a shower or tub surround, you really should be going over a cement board and a thin set only. Mastic will fail in a wet area. Since your doing a large tile, I would recommend a thin set only..Along with the proper trowel which is a 1/4x3/8ths. If you want brand names, the only 2 I ve used in the last 20+ years are H B Fuller ( Tec) and Custom Thin sets. If you have any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: MyMy bathroom. which is about 75 square feet has a carpet and I want to change it to tile. The only utility is a toilet. How do I handle the toilet? If I use ceramic tile, does the toilet sit on the ceramic tile and does that cause a problem with breaking the tile? What do you recommend that is practical, easy to install, and still functional?
If you are not totally convinced that you want ceramic tile take a look at a flooring called Traffic Master. Last spring we put it in 2 of our bathrooms and it looks great! It is 3 or 4 times thicker than normal vinyl and very durable and quite inexpensive comparatively to tile or other flooring. It comes in 1 foot by 3 foot sections, and is a peel and stick tongue and groove type of installation. You may be set on tile, but do yourself a favor and check it out at Home Depot before you decide. And as an added bonus, you won't need to add the toilet extension but I highly recommend that do put in a new wax ring. Good luck!
Q: Our new kitchen tile floor was grouted last Thursday (almost a week ago). They did a poor job removing grout from the tile surface - very rough ceramic tile. I‘ve washed and scrubbed, it is cemented on. On top of that I don‘t like the grout color.Nothing has been sealed. So I got some acid wash and a grout stain from Home Depot. The stain says the tile should have been sealed prior to using it, I dont understand why that is. So I dont stain the tile? I‘m afraid if I sealed the tile it would seal the grout, so seems like a bad idea. And the acid wash... is this going to ruin the grout itself? How careful do I need to be about not getting in on the grout? Unfortunately its a large area, kitchen and dining area. 12‘ x 30‘. I‘ll be scrubbing a long time.Any suggestions to make this easier? Thanks!
Wait a minute. If the tile is a natural stone, it should have been sealed prior to grouting to prevent the grout from seeping into the stone. If it's ceramic or porcelain tile, sealing is normally not required. When grouting, it is common practice to remove the excess grout as you go so the stuff doesn't build up and dry on the tile. This is what happened in your kitchen. Consult with your local tile supply or hardware store for the correct product, then use it exactly as directed. It is true that a vinegar solution will remove grout haze from tile, but if there are chunks of grout stuck to the tile you'll need to carefully remove them and then work on the spot with the vinegar. While it may be more work, I'd try the vinegar on a small area before using harsh chemicals. Now, you can buy grout stain that will work if the grout has not been sealed. If it has been recently sealed, you'll have a hard time with the stain. Good luck.
Q: We had to remove some tile and break out the wall behind our shower/bath wall in order to put in a new part for new fixtures. So, now we need to repair that portion of the wall (about 3‘x2‘) and re-tile it. Do we need to use greenboard (it looks like either that or just drywall was used originally) or cement board? Also, how do we join the new portion of backing to the old portion? When tiles are removed, they damage the old backing -- so I can‘t take off an extra row of tiles and then have that backer exposed in order to tape and put mortar over. Hubby says we can cut the backer to fit the opening, and then just go ahead and tile, and that the grout will effectively seam and waterproof those joints where the new backing meets the old tiled backing. Any suggestions?
bathing room tiles are farley affordable and uncomplicated to place in. i does not paint them, that seems particularly cheesy to me. i could propose only changing all of them. if it is the bathtub encompass area you're conversing approximately my company replaces all of that for $650 which contains the hardi board in the back of the tile. that's definitely significant in case you have had some lacking tiles or cracked tiles because of the fact moisture gets in the back of there and motives mold. while you're conversing approximately portray floor tile i could additionally propose only changing all of it. Tiling isn't that confusing extraordinarily in a bathing room on the grounds that its so small. i could say splurge slightly and get new tile. it is going to a great deal improve the look of your bathing room. And dont be afraid to circulate with tiles in sizes including 13x13 on partitions and 20x20 on flooring. It particularly makes the area look greater.
Q: is it better to rent a wet saw, or will a tile cutter be less expensive and less messy
Wet saws can be messy. That's what I use. The other tile cutters will sometimes break in the wrong place. I would prefer to use a wet saw, messy or not.
Q: My grandpa‘s bathroom needs to have a few adjustments made to it, namely safety bars put in place around the tub to help him in and out. The problem: every wall is covered in glazed tile (which I know makes a difference) and the bars need to be screwed in.My question is this: how? I know that using just a drill bit will shatter the tile, even a carbide one because the tile‘s glazed. Thanks much, kisses and ten points to the best answer.
Put masking tape over the spot you want to drill. Drill through the tape and into the tile. This is supposed to help prevent chipping and cracking of the tile.
Q: How would one grout mosaic tiles on standing mirror?
Grout application on a mirror is exactly the same process as grouting a tile floor, back-splash, counter top, or table. Since the mirror is standing, I'd be sure that the mirror won't topple over when applying the grout because it has to be floated into the crevices between the tiles / tile pieces. If possible I'd suggest laying the mirror flat, either on the floor or on a sturdy worktable A grout float is basically a block shaped pushing tool used to force the grout between the tiles. Hold the float at an angle against the tiled surface and use a firm sweeping motion across the tile to push/force the grout into all the nooks, crannies, cracks and openings between the tiles. You'll have to work fairly quickly because grout becomes hard to work once it starts drying out. Work in a diagonal pattern and go back over any low or missed areas. Allow the grout to sit for 20-30 minutes. You'll know the grout is starting to cure when there is a light haze on the tile surface. Using a sponge and a bucket of clean water lightly buff the tile to remove the haze. This step may have to be repeated once or twice to be sure that all of the excess grout has been removed from the tile surface. If you want to seal the grout and tile, there are a number of sealant products available but you'll need to wait 3 or 4 days before applying in order to allow the grout to cure properly.
Q: are tiles get really dirty fast and i tried everything and i cant get them to stay white could i use bleach?
Clean your bathroom tiles with a soft cloth or mop using pH neutral cleaning solution. Always wipe off any spills immediately as they happen. Never, ever clean this floor with vinegar, as you will destroy the finish. Tile specific cleaning products are available.I recommend you Lustro Italiano Cleaner and Polish which is specifically designed and PH balanced for tile Surfaces. Compared to other polishes and cleaners, it creates a deeper longer lasting shine. you can find it in my source site.
Q: Im trying to figure out how to apply (vct) Vinyl tile squares? Whats the best way to start a project? What adhesive do you use if any? Is it like ceramic with some form of grout? etc!
They are usually like giant stickers. The stickly glue is already on the back of them, if not go to a home improvement store, they have glue that you put down before applying the squares. Start in the very middle of the room.
Q: Can I apply ceramic tile to my bedroom that is on the 2nd floor? My parents are saying I can‘t because the tile will weigh the floor down over timeIs there any danger in putting tile on a 2nd floor?
Weight is not an issue. Homes are designed to carry 40 or more pounds per square foot. Tile is not much heavier that other flooring surfaces such as carpet or hardwood so will not tax the structure at all. The current sub floor is probably not stiff enough for tile so adding an underlayment is probably a good idea. Whether this is a good idea is another matter altogether. Tile is a decidedly unfriendly surface for a bedroom. It is hard and cold. Drop something like a glass on it and you have a mess and nothing is colder to the foot except granite. I would not tile my bedroom and having it tiled is likely to make selling the house more difficult.
