Q:I have several boxes of wall tile and I would like to use some on a floor. Is this okay? What is the difference?: No because when wall tile gets wet it gets very slipery. You would be creating an ice scating rink.

Q:When tiling a counter top, do you need to remove the existing covering? I am assuming that I would. If so, should I apply the tile directly to the plywood? Will the plywood be wide enough?: This is a litttle tricky to answer because I can't see what you have to work with. However, here is how I do it. Remove all of the old counter top down to where you can see down into the cabinets below. Then I use 3/4 inch thick plywood. It doesn't have to be the sanded kind because over the top of that I put a layer or the thin 1/4 inch tile backer board, sometimes called Miracle Board or Cement board. Be sure to counter sink the screw heads just below the serfice or you will have problems seating your tile. I always try to size my top at this point so I don't have to cut many tiles. Every situation is different so you have to do some figuring at this point. I always lay my tiles out dry to see how they fit first. Then you must think about the edge trim that will go around the outside edge of the counter top. I use oak but that also depends on what style you are doing but none the less something must incaplsulate the tiled area. Use the little tile spacers at the corners of the tiles to get an even fit. They are shaped like an + and are cheap. Most home centers have guides for free that have good info, take advantage of that. I wish I could send a picture of my island top. Just looking at a picture helps alot. Also, use the pre-mixed latex adhesive to put them down, much better and don't forget to seal the grout when it is dry. Good luck!

Q:i need help putting up counter tops and backsplashes.(tile): Yes you do get tile cement that will stick to smooth surfaces. You can all so rough the surface up with a coarse sandpaper. You do get a bonding liquid that you apply before you put the tile cement it helps with the bonding. Just make sure the counter top isn't flexible because that can cause problems All so make sure when you fill the tile joins with grout that it fills it good and make sure your grout is water resistant

Q:I want to replace my wood flooring with porcelain wood like tile because i have a dog but my uncle who is a contractor said because of the house not sitting on concrete foundation ( meaning you can go under the house) i can only install vinyl or wood flooring again because tile is too heavy but um we have tile in the kitchen and restrooms and my other uncle who has a two story home has tile upstairs so i dont get it: With your pet I would go with Pergo flooring - it is easy to clean, doesn't stain, easy to install and looks amazing.

Q:I have a basement about 25X25 does anyone know how much it would cost to put vinyl tile down?: Is the floor sealed properly to prevent moisture from causing tile to lift after installation if not it could cost double the amount assuming that the calculation is correct. I can only assume that 25x25 is in feet so that would be 625 square feet. self adhesive tiles may not stick well to cement so applying glue then the tiles might be a better idea. I am not sure about the price but the last time I checked these where less expensive then the self adhesive tiles. Personal I would consult with the folks at the hardware store talk to one of the older ones as they would have more experience. They will also help you estimate the cost so you can consider the value of your purchase before you decide proceed!

Q:What does the thinset and grout do to tiles when installing them?: The thin set ( either a grey is what adheres the tile to the substrate your bonding to.It is also used as a filler when setting a cement board down to the floor. This ensures there is no voids between the sub floor and the cement board to make a solid base for tile. The grout is to fill the space between the tiles to help support the tile and to prevent dirt between the needed space for tiles. Q:I want to use the tiles for a back splash in the kitchen. Is there a reason I have to use the spacers? Why can‘t I put them where they are touching each other? I‘m not using them on a floor. I don‘t like the look of the space between the tiles.: Sorry to disagree with almost everyone, but, the two main purposes of grout are waterproofing and keeping a straightt and level run on the tile. Tile adhesive (for walls) is more the enough to hold a tile in place for a very long time (I tiled behind my fridge more than a decade ago and never got around to grouting). With that being said, you can use any width grout line you like. The thinner the line, the harder it is to keep your run straight and your tiles level to each other. Without a grout line, water can seep behind the tile and damage your wall (or sub floor). Even the most perfectly laid tiles done by a master tile layer will have a grout line. The best laid marble has a grout line of 1/16 th of an inch. That is VERY difficult to do right. Good Luck
