Q: I went and removed 3 ft of tiles from the side of the bath tub starting at the bottom. The tiles had the cement on it so it came off the wall exposing the wood the to the house and i saw the water damage to the wood. How do i patch up the wall? Do I use plywood and than cement it and than add the new tiles?
If I understand the problem correctly, it sounds like you have water damage inside you wall. You first need to find out what caused that damage. If you repair the wall without finding the water leak, it will happen again. If the area was dry rot and it didn't sem like there was currently water there, then it is likely safe to fix. Carefully remove tiles until you no longer see any water damage to the wood. I'm not sure what wood is there. If its plywood, replace it with a like thickness (most of the time today, they use drywall, but its a special kind that is usually green that's made for bathrooms and moist areas). Before replacing the tiles, clean them up and remove any old grout from the edges. Be careful as the tile are very brittle and break easy. There are a number of bathroom tile type caulks that can adhere the tile to the wood. I suggest going to somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot or a similar store and ask someone in the plumbing dept or the paint dept what kind of caulk to use to attach tile to wood. Apply the tile to the wall using the caulk. Now you need to re-grout the seams. Buy grout and apply it in all the seams. Let it completely dry (read the box but most say at least 24 to 48 hrs to completely cure) then after its cured, apply grout sealer over the top of the grout seams.
Q: The tile is attached to sheetrock and I don‘t want to damage the sheetrock by ripping off the old tile.
NO!!!! the top tile will crack if you do that do not do that it will be super expensive to get it fixed
Q: We are looking to buy a house and we‘re choosing between tile and hardwood floor. I prefer hardwood because I feel its easier to clean and more comfortable. Husband prefers the tile. Is it just personal preference or is one better than another, cleaning wise.
I would go with the hardwood floor. As the styles change and you redecorate your house, the wood will match anything you do to the house whereas the tile may not. If a tile cracked and the ones in your house are not sold, you will have to replace the entire floor otherwise you will have a patch that doesn't match in the floor. Also, tile has to be regrouted more than the hardwood would need to be refinished. If you decided down the road that you wanted to go with tile, you could remove the hardwood much easier than tile. Hardwood is just a classic type of flooring and if it gets cold, you can just throw some floor rugs here and there (which would be a good idea in high traffic areas any) and it is as cozy as ever.
Q: My foyer and hallway is white tile with white grout. I am more vintage/traditional and was going to be using new grout. Are there any other colors besides white that will look good for the grout?
They missed a step....Use a good clear silicone caulking in the 'crack' where tile and grout meet wall. Otherwise, if for example, someone showers and gets water on the floor, it will get into this area, go under the tile and start to ruin the flooring under the tile. Mold and mildew can also grow in these wet areas. Molding trim only covers the edge of the tile giving it a neater more finished appearance, but it's still cosmetic...to protect, you need to seal or caulk around the outer edges of your flooring. You will also need to use a sealant on the grout between your new tiles as well, or the same problem can occur, as grout is porous and can absorb water and soapy liquids which then go down into the underflooring, and different liquids can stain the grout.
Q: How does the tile stick up? The benefits of stickers? What is the difference between sticky and wet stickers? Do i want to be thin
Dry paste only refers to the floor tiles, wall tiles are not posted, dry paste is the first layer of dry mortar, and then in the floor tile on a layer of cement paste, paste on the dry mortar, this paste the floor Brick deformation is small, wet paste is on the ground directly with cement mortar paste floor tile, this paste is easy to deformation. If you want to stick thin, use wet stickers.
Q: Immediately home decoration, and now consider the floor, but they do not understand anything, so would like to ask about what the advantages of the two? How much can the cost be?
Floor of the four major advantages: beautiful, durable; good comfort; use of geothermal heating and thermal insulation performance; price is slightly cheaper, and the construction is simple, free installation. Advantages Details: the floor has a beautiful, durable characteristics, natural wood species, can be a good performance of a person's life grade. The ground is too hard will make people feel uncomfortable, wear large public places in order to ensure the ground wear life, had to use hard ground materials, and living room and other living areas with better flexibility of the wooden floor, not only make the foot feel comfortable , And can greatly reduce the impact noise on the floor, a fundamental solution to the problem of excessive noise, so that the room is more warm and peaceful. In general, the high-end brand of composite wood flooring products in the price of 90 to 120 yuan per square meter. In the high-end brands of ceramic tiles in the price of 150 to 250 yuan per square meter. Wood flooring installation method is simple, the dealer's prices are included in the auxiliary materials and construction costs, so you can let it free installation. Tiles of five major advantages: easy to clean, easy maintenance, easy to hide pollution, no air pollutants; long life, generally can use 10-20 years; fire, water, corrosion performance; environmental protection; Advantages: If you want to be convenient enough, then choose the brick it. Casually in which building materials market, there are a variety of sizes, all kinds of colors and various patterns of floor tiles for sale. With a piece of tiles can spell out their vision of family life. And tiles to take care of particularly convenient, sweep, rub a rub can be very clean. Tiles do not have to worry about being wet with water or hard to plan
Q: i used the baskup board, the adhesive, then put the adhesive on each tile.
Based on limited info I offer the following: Backer board doesn't compensate for a weak floor, which could be the culprit here. Foundation and/or framing is shifting (unstable) and causing the cracks.
Q: The tile at the store says $5.00 per square foot.. so I'm assuming that's the cost of the tile only.. and then how much does it generally cost to install? Another $5 or more per square foot? I am new to this all.
$ 4.00 - $ 6.00 per sq ft installed......includes grouting.....but no material, pay for all material.... lic. gen. contractor
Q: how to tile vanity top and back splash?
No you don t have to, since this is really classified as a non wet area. I know you ll splash some water there but the basic tile will take care of that. You won t hurt a thing replacing the sheet rock with it but you don t need to. To tile a vanity top, secure ( glue and screw) 3/4 ply or 2 -1/2 ( cross the ply graining for strength ) ply to the counter top. Properly thinset and nail down (or screw down)1/2 cement board to the ply with proper length galvanized nails or screws. Thin set down your tile and grout after 24 hrs. Then re set you plumbing. I ve done a couple 100 over the years and not 1 failure going over the dry wall in this type of non wet area.. Wet areas such as tubs and showers I ve always used a cement backer board .. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: I will be making a 36 x 36 hearthboard for my gas fireplace stove out of slate tile. Do I need to space them and use grout in between or can I just cement them down next to each other like you would glue down vinyl tiles?
With a gas stove, Code just requires you don't set it on something combustible. With joints of any kind it is considered combustable since heat can travel through the grout/mortar but wont travel through the tile, so if your going to make it your self, the easiest way is to buy a piece of Cement board from HomeDepot, and glue all your tiles down with Power Grab caulk then fill the joints with grout, other wise it is not code. Just sticking them to the floor does not qualify and if anything ever happens your liable for it, insurance wont cover it. This kind of board won't work for wood though, it would have to be heavier duty. Make sure you make it big enough to meet the clearance to combustibles listed on the back of the stove as well
