- Becoming a tile setter is not hard at all. I've been a tiler for 7 years and am now 24 years old. The hardest part of the job is carrying countless boxes of tiles up and down stairs. You have to not be afraid to use hand tools such as grinders and undercut saws. Also, be prepared to make a mess of yourself with all the thinset and glue because you will be repositioning tile to fit it right and will get stuff on your hands and continue to wipe on yourself :)
- Q: can I lay porcelain floor tiles butted up with no grout. These will be laid on underfloor heating? They are quite large 600 x 600. Any info will help. Thanks
- No you shouldn t.. Dirt, dust and every day stuff will accumulate in the joints and be almost impossible to get out. All tiles are designed to have a space, some smaller and some larger than others. The grout the goes between the tiles is part of the system to make it stable. Sealing the grout is a major help in keeping it clean and stain free, if this is your concern. Porcelain is made to have a sanded grout along with a space of 1/8 to about 1/4 inch. Or 3/6 mm This spacing will also help make up for minor tile sizes that will throw you off if you try to but them tight. - Q: we had our bathroom redone, it looks great but the guy that did it got some grout on one of the decorative tiles, where it shouldn‘t be. Is there a way to get the grout off ?
- It will depend on the skill of your personal observe. If you think it will look better you may try. After all it your house and the choice is yours. How it will look better you think and if necessary reinstall the tiles.

- Some general guidelines , but don t pay strict attention to is thickness, maker of the tile body of the tile, and price.. Some major brands include, American Olean, Florida Tile, Dal Tile,Interceamic,Lauflen. There are more out there but these will give you a start. Look through their selection on line to get some ideas and each site will have a store locator to find a dealer near you. If this floor will be in a high traffic area and you want easy maintenance, stick with ceramics and porcelains. Natural stones like marbles and travertines look great but must be sealed before installation, after installation and every so often after. In a residential setting regular ceramics wil work fine, porcelains are very nice but over sold by salespeople that really don t know.Theres nothing wrong with them just don t go looking for only them. Installation (on average) is in the 4/5$ a s/f range. This may or may not include floor prep such as the PROPER (thickness) backer board needed in most residential settings. - yes, I used it in my kitchen floor. One advantage of linoleum is it's easy to clean.
- Q: We have an installer, whom seems to be doing it wrong. I can‘t find any website that explains how to install tile the way he is doing it. Can you tell me if this sounds correct?First he puts mortar on the bare cement floor, then put down versa-bond or a bonding agent.. and then he puts more mortar on the tile and then lays it down.. Does this sound right to you?Thanks
- Versa bond is a thin set brand name. It s a good thin set too.So I m not sure what you mean by a bonding agent. And putting it on the back of the tile is a method ( slow method) of setting and leveling tile. I would have to know the trowel sizes that he / she is using before passing a final judgement. I would use a bigger notched trowel on the floor and just a thin smooth coat on the tile back. Both methods will level tile and ensure a full coat of thin set for tile to bond well to the floor. - Q: the tiles are laid down using thinset cement. Mastic not used.
- if they are ceramic and have been laid in a morter bed (standard way of laying these tile) your going to end up breaking a lot of them --best to tear them all up and start over scrape floor as much as you can to get old morter off be careful if your on a wood base -- not as bad if your on a slab
- Q: I am about to renewing my kitche.I plan to install tile.Well I have no tile cutter but I do have a simple, regular cutt off electrical tools and a diamond blade.Should this be enough for it?
- just rent one from homedepot there cheap. just save all the cutting for one day
