- Q: We are looking to buy a house and we‘re choosing between tile and hardwood floor. I prefer hardwood because I feel its easier to clean and more comfortable. Husband prefers the tile. Is it just personal preference or is one better than another, cleaning wise.
- Pros and Cons: 1)Porcelaine and ceramic tile are harder and will wear better with sand and water. However, you have grout to deal with (seal it and use the right cleaners and that wont be a big con) 2) Wood is beautiful and warm. It can warp with moisture, and scratch, especially with sand. Of course durability should be an issue, and it really depends on how much sand you will track in, and how much moisture will be on the floor. They do make some tiles that look like wood. One that is really nice is Interceramic's Timberland series. That might be a nice compromise.
- Q: OK here is my problem. I want to switch my bath tub to an all-tile shower and wonder how to do it. So far the tile were set onto a cement board that was itself put on top of the drywall. I am wondering if this is a common thing. From all my research, it looks like tile should be on the cement board, but there is no use for extra drywall behind it. It actually makes things tougher because you need some sort of corner tile instead of normal bullnose since the cement board and the rest of the wall are not at the same level.My second question is: is there an order to do all this i.e. should I make the shower pan (sort of rubber sheet filled with cement), before or after I install the cement board on the wall. Is there a specific angle used for the drain?Thanks in advance for all your tips.
- take off all tile and wallboard down to the studs.move all plumbing,use a pvc liner which bolts to the drain flange.when nailing the liner to the studs run the liner about a foot up the wall.no fastners 9in or lower or it will leak.put up your concrete board,remember no fastners 9in or lower concrete will hold the bottom.form a curb using 2x6s run the liner in the middle of the form. use a 2x6 braced against the back wall inside the shower to hold the form inside the shower. fill with concrete on both sides.i use quickcrete sand topping mix.let the curb dry for 24 hrs.pull the form.now pour concrete inside the curb. your pan should have a pitch of 1/4 in.for every foot from the drain.let dry again for 24 hrs.do not use wall mastic as adhesive for the tile, use mortar.i also use hydroguard 1 from dal-tile in the corners and seams.you can brush it on.now your ready to tile.if you dont have any bullnose ,you can use a metal trim. i use dal-tile #a100.get a mosiac tile for the floor so it will wrap the pitch of the floor.use a sanded grout on the floor.you can butt the tile joints on the wall but if you do, use a nonsanded grout.silicone all corners.putting in a custom shower is one of the hardest thing you can do in your home,

- with backsplashes, you cannot charge a sq ft price. They are time consuming and usually have lots of detail. 100 sf seems like a lot for a backsplash. Generally, they are in the 20-40 sf range. I am in eastern USA. I have a flat minimum of $ 450. But as the detail increases, so should the price because it will take you much longer.

- Yes you can paint tiles,but first you have to under coat the tiles before you can put the top coat on..I did it to my kitchen tiles it certainly made it look a lot better.
- Q: This is a new house and they put 16 inch tiles in the bathrooms, which I don't care for. The floors are fine as far as leveling goes, but I would like to put 12 inch tiles directly over the 16 inch ones. Would there be any problems?
- never tile over tile even if it is level tear it up and put down the new stuff it wont cost anything but a few hrs at the most if you do it yourself you will need the same stuff for the new floor as you would if you tiled over it when you tile over tile it will only last about a year if your lucky to your second question yes it depends on whats making the squeak if the floor is not properly secured then the tile will start to come up over time however it could also just be that it is a new home and the home is just settling in they will move with temperiture changes witch just is the wood expanding and contracting. good luck and i hope this helped

- You should definitely remove the tile as well as the underlayment for the tile. Screw down the subfloor to the floor joist so that the new floor doesn't squeak. Install vinyl underlayment, crack fill the joints and install your vinyl flooring. Be sure to pay attention to your threshold where the new floor meets the old floor at the door openings.
