Q: i need to cut a hole in ceramic floor tile. i have tried many things such as dremel with different ceramic tile cutting attachments and a carbide hole saw.what should i try next?
In the plumbing section of most hardware stores a cable saw can be found its used to cut pipe in hard to reach areas. some will cut tile. In the drill bit area find a Glass/ Tile bit big enough for the cable and go to it. a coping saw may work other thought. use tile bit to start and nippers, files will work as well use water as a lube. I hope someone else has a better Idea for you.
Q: hey guys my house just got renovated a few days ago... it seems like some tiles have tough stains on it. is there a type of detergent or anything that removes it off? it looks well ugly and makes the surface rough... it's on both my floor and wall tiles
The use of muratec acid will remove the glaze on the tile. Not sure if diluted will or not but I d never use it . The use of a metal chisel can leave marks on the tile that you ll never get off. First ,if this is thin set still on the tile get the tile person back to clean it off. Barring that , if you have to do it, scrape what you can off with something softer. I use a piece of wood. After the lumps come off use a white nylon pad and go over the tile dry with it.Special pads used for tile clean up can be bought most any place that sells tile. Their called a doodle bug pad. While your there you might want to get a small bottle of grout and effervescent remover.About $8 for an 8 oz bottle. If going over the tile dry doesn t remove it, then go with the cleaner.Doing it wet right away will only reintroduce any removed thin set or grout to the tile. After all cleaned up consider sealing the tile ,but not before it s cleaned.Tile Lab and Cerama Seal sealers work well. You ll ned to wait for a minimum of 72 hours with all pentatrating sealers Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar GL
Q: we layed tile after hurricane katrina whats the protocal about if you should tile the whole house with the same color tile my 10 yr old wants different tile then we layed in the bedroom. Does this effect the value of your home or does it matter?
As long as you use neutral colors that flow well together it will not affect the resale value of your home. Now, if you put in a bright orange pattened tile it would negatively affect the value. FYI - Most people don't like tile throughout the WHOLE house. People tend to prefer hardwood or carpets in the bedrooms. If you're not going to be selling your house soon, I wouldn't worry about it.
Q: My husband and I are disagreeing about tile on the wall. What is your opinion about tile on the bathroom wall, half way up? Here are the yes and no‘s of arguments:YES:The tile is neutral and beautiful. There is a WOW factor when you walk in and see the extra tile. It‘s practical for our household with a one year old who splashes and may smudge a non-tiled bathroom wall.NO:It‘s old fashioned, not necessary and I would rather have empty wall space available to paint from top to bottom. There only needs to be tile around the bath tub, for splashing and practicality purposes.
I would definitely tile! especially with children in the house. I still love the idea that my teenage boys' bathroom is STILL tiled! and who says it has to be old fashioned? only if you are using 3x3 white tiles. use bigger, more earthy toned tile. even if you can't afford travertine, you can still get look-a-like ceramic! Good luck to y'all!
Q: but, not all the same time b/c I can‘t afford it. which project should be done first? a friend told me it is better to replace the tiles first because the dust is not good for paint.paint vanities orreplace tiles orreplace the bathtub?
i would probably paint first, that way if you spill paint it doesnt ruin the new tile? or replace the tub and tile first then lay something over the entire floor before you paint and do the rest? hmmm sorry im of no help thats a tough one lol
Q: ive never tiled anything before. i was thinking of replacing our old tiles around the fireplace and puttnig in slate ones. i am wondering if its a bigger project than it seems. will i have to remove the mantle to do it. is it harder to tile something on the wall or fireplace than the floor? should i just seek a professional or is it easy?thanks
I don't know about horrible but certainly impractical; unless the fireplace is merely decorative; or an electric one. TILE is usually fired at approx. 2000 degrees; essentially creating glass. It's highly unlikely you'd ever have a fireplace fire get that hot...Hopefully. The issue is more that constant stress on the tile in heating and cooling; and the effect on any mortar you choose. Beyond that is the issue of the tile being hidden most often; and the need to clean it often to be able to view it when no fire is present. Fireplaces are crafted using Brick, that allows no such effects from temp variations, and offers some level of insulation against the heat produced within the confines of the fireplace. Certainly you might consider tiling a hearth; or creating a hearth that you can tile; but it seems a bit defeating to tile into a fireplace. Tile; especially floor type; are created through different heat ranges and substances; to be graded in durability. Assume something like A being the least durable, and D being the most durable. That equates to normal traffic and wear. I'll assume someone will tell you; Sure; there are heat resistant tiles and mortars but I'll go back to my notion of the aesthetics and ask why bother? Q: I have 12x12 tiles in my kitchen on the floor and about 5 of them are cracked/damaged. How hard is it to replace them, can I do it myslef or hire a professional? What materials will be needed?
It's not difficult but it takes some strength and patience. You'll have to break off the damaged tiles and chip the mortar (cement like stuff) until it is flat and even. You can use a chisel for this since it's a small surface. Take out the grout around the tile as well. Then you'll need some mortar, the replacement tile, and grout (color need to match existing grout). Place the prepared mortar on the square using a trowel and lay the tile on it - make sure the tile is even with the existing flooring. If it sinks too low, add mortar, if it pops up too high, take out excess mortar. Then wait 24 hours and then apply the prepared grout over the tile using a rubber float. Scrub clean with wet sponge - might take several times to get the grout film off the tile surface. Wait another 24 hours for the grout to set before walking on it. All done.
Q: tile itself
There is a powered floor scrapper that can be rented. You have to buy the blade but it isn't that expensive. Most good tool rentals have them.
Q: Now very popular tile 80X80 pink above the tea stains, how can effectively remove the tea stains?
