- Q: I am remodeling a small bathroom only 39sq ft. I had someone come out and give me an estimate, he brought a sample of a job he did and tried to sell me on that design, which will NOT complement my existing fixtures, since my existing fixtures are fairly new, I decided to reuse those to save me money. Anyways, this sample he brought me used 16in tiles, since my bathroom is so small, I think huge tile will make it seem even smaller and claustrophobic, I was thinking 1in-4in tiles, but this guy insists that large tile will make the small bathroom seem larger, is there any truth to this? Also, what is a good price to pay, I want the tub replaced, the tile around the tub, replace the small window, flip the sink and toilet so that the sink sits where the toilet is at and the toilet where the sink is, maybe re-tile the floor. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
- It depends on the type of tile - sometimes flash bathrooms which are marble clad are in big sheets and this tends to make it look spacious especially if the floor matches the wall. Small tiles can make the wall look rather busy and not allow the eye to travel and are not very thrilling looking - you sound like you could do with a bit of Wow factor. If it's small enough I would use something like opaque/coloured glass sheet with no joins at all - maybe in combination with mirror sheet, or sheet laminate as a cheaper alternative. Mosaics can be attractive however and if light enough can be just as space enhancing. At the end of the day it is a small bathroom and there will be limit to how big you can make it appear. The advantage of a small layout is nothing should cost very much as there isn't much of it - and nothing is far awy from any supplies or wastes, not to be able to have the layout you want. Tthe best way to save money is to open a bank account, not remodel a bathroom. A really nice bathroom will add value to your house, a crappy one done on the cheap will have the opposite effect.

- Tile Council of North America calls for 1 1/8 thick subfloor over 16 on-center floor joists. Chances are, your subfloor is the original 3/4 tongue-in-groove installed with the house. This would certainly explain the cracking. Here's the thing: adding cement board over plywood does not add structural integrity. You can't use backerboard to achieve the desired thickness-- its purpose is as a bonding agent only. You have to put down more plywood. If you are below rating, there's no option but to increase the thickness of your floor. It may not be level with the rest of the home, but that's what beveled thresholds are for.

- Q: I bought 12 x 12 ceramic tile from Lowe‘s branded as SURFACE SOURCE with a PEI rating 4. I bought each tile for $0.58 each. I want to use the tile for the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room and living room. The tile was made in Mexico. I think the tile was being discontinued at Lowe‘s. - Hi Jerry, You got a great deal! Just install it with care and it will last for a long time. But do be careful with your installation and be sure to use a good underlayment. Also, I would recommend laying out your job so that you have at least 5% of the tiles left after the last room. That way if you do have some that break you can easily replace them. A PEI rating of 4 is the second highest rating - good for all residential applications. Enjoy your good fortune and your good shopping skills - that was a smart move!!

- The best answer, of course, is to pull the tile. If you want, however, you can go right over the top by gluing a sheet of 1/8 or 1/4 sheet product (lauan or cheap paneling) over the tile using mastic. Making sure it is level and solid, you can then apply laminate directly over the top. I've done it on two remodels on rental properties and it worked just fine.
