- Q:I am redoing my bathroom floor and I am going to use stick on tiles how do I put them on? Do you just stick them on the
- Make sure the floor is clean and all the old glue from previous installations has been removed. Pop a chalk mark from opposing walls so they cross in the center of the room. Start at the center and work towards the walls so that everything looks even all the way around when you're finished. If the tiles have lines or a pattern running in one direction then turn every other tile 90 degrees or it will look wavery. To help the tiles stick, stack them up and let an electric heater blow on them for 30 minutes prior to starting installation. Warm tiles are a lot easier to lay and get butted up without cracks between them.
- Q:We laid tile in our shower and I used too much grout. Now I need to know how to get the grout lines even without damaging the tile. Any help would be appreciated.
- If you let the grout get *really* wet, and if you haven't sealed it yet, after it soaks for a while, you should be able to rub it off with a towel or rage, if you use a bit of elbow grease. It will come off without damaging the tile
- Q:i want to tile my house, i also want to pay less than a dollar per square foot for the materials. on top of that i want 16 tile... i know these deal exhist but i dont know where to look... please help
- With all due respect; CHEAP is such a relative word. After installing multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile, I've often been called to remediate what others have done on the cheap. SHOP everywhere. Certainly there are discount flooring places all over the globe. Beyond cheap, your greater issue might be having the quantity you need for Whole house, and a FEW extra boxes for the OOOPS factor that Murphys law so clearly states. No offense; but in KNOWING deals exist why not just shop the WWW or yellow pages; HD or Lowes for discontinued closeouts; etc. If you find any for less than $1 per sq. ft. let me know; I'll buy the entire warehouse full. Without knowing at all the size of the area you want to tile, or if you've considered Hardness grades; or if you intend to set the tile yourself; I suggest some local research. BTW... the rationale behind buying 10% or more extra; is that Tile is not produced as a common item forever, nor stocked as such. Certainly you might get lucky and find a company that bailed out of a selection of 10,000 sq. ft. or more and now the vendor has to discount it. Steven Wolf
- Q:I recently removed some old tile in my kitchen that was bound to the floor with adhesive. I‘d like to either remove the adhesive or make that area of the floor level in order to place some stick tile. What is the best solution for this? Do I need a sealant? Should I chip up the old adhesive and then seal the floor? Thanks!
- If you are going to install any type of self stick or glue down tile the floor has to be completely smooth underneath. If not you will see ridges and grooves all over the floor. Go to your local lumber yard or tile store and get adhesive remover to remove the old glue. Then you are going to want to fill in any cracks, seams or low spots in the sub floor with 'crack fill' and sand the repairs smooth. Then seal the sub floor with a primer made for the type of tile you are going to put down and install the tile according to the manufacturers recommendations. Good Luck.
- Q:but, not all the same time b/c I can‘t afford it. which project should be done first? a friend told me it is better to replace the tiles first because the dust is not good for paint.paint vanities orreplace tiles orreplace the bathtub?
- I think when we did our basement bathroom, we did paint, then tub, then tile. Painting your vanity will be least expensive. I would start there.
- Q:I have some old dark tile in our entry way. It‘s not an option right now to replace it, so I‘d like to make it look better if possible. When I mop it and it looks nice and shiny. Then when it dries it looks dull. Is there any way to make it shiny all the time? Thanks
- You could try to re-seal the tile. Is your tile glazed? Glazed tiles should never need to be sealed, as the glaze is the sealer. Do a water test first to see if your tile is soaking up water. Put a little water on the tile if it turns dark, then your tile needs to be re-sealed. If you just want to make it shiny, you can try a topical sealer. Your local tile/flooring store should be able to help you pick the best one. There is also something called a 'wear layer' which is an acrylic floor finish that helps to keep you from wearing through the sealer. Again, your local tile store can help you with this step.
- Q:My wall tiles has been for more than 20yrs owned by first owner. Due to limited budget,i have not replaced them when i bought over as 2nd owner, but have done a coat of spray paint on it thru contractor, Now after 5 yrs, some of these spray paint are coming off, any suggestion what i can do , i do not want to hack the wall and replace new wall tiles very costly, someone suggest buying bathroom tiles stickers on those tiles with paint coming off.. anyone with better suggestion on DIY ..plse help---
- Just repaint, or color match the existing paint and touch up the bad areas.
- Q:we have an outside toilet which has been removed and we are wanting to change the room in to a washing room. it is a brick out building and the brick has been painted, how easy is it to tile over this and how could it be done?
- ' sure it can be done but the plaster over paint of course could fall off after the paint begins to peel. Its best to scrape off as much of the paint as possible first before you plaster. You might use a paint remover to help make things easier. Plaster will stick best to wet bricks not dry bricks. then butter the tiles on the back and stick them on, however, its not going to be easy, I am afraid, unless the bricks are absolutely straight. good luck on this. You have your work cut out for you.
- Q:I am installing some mesh mounted 12x12 glass tiles sheets on one wall of my kitchen (behind the stove). I was reading online how to do it and I have a question. Some sites say to put the bottom tiles flush with the counter top and some sites say to use 1/8 spacers between the countertop and the bottom of the tiles and fill in with grout colored cauk. Which should I do? Thanks

- Q:I purchased a DIY tile backsplash kit which costs originally $134.00. Kit includes 15 sq feet of tile, grout and tools needed to install. Lowe‘s sells the kit. The problem is the color is not the color I need. So I have this bright idea to paint the tile the color I want. I only paid $40.00 for the kit. I called one of the paint suppliers and they told me a spray paint I could use for the glass tile, however, I am afraid tha after I paint the tile, install it and then add the grouting, it may take the paint off!. I don‘t know, if it would or not. I was thinking I could spray polyurethan over the tile before I grout it or would that work? Not sure what to do. This kit is a new method for putting up a backsplash in your kitchen. It is actually peel and stick and then you must grout within 2 hours.
