There are other types of sanders you can rent (I've used a 4 disc sander to refinish a floor) that are not as aggressive as a drum sander but they do take longer to sand. Even hiring a pro to sand and refinish the floor would most likely be much less expensive than buying new wood. But if you have the coin and are set on switching to cherry you can certainly install a new floor over the old floor provided the old floor is in sound condition (not loose and warped).

I've seen too much sub-standard work in brand new buildings to feel safe giving an opinion.
