A3: Rattan is a member of the palm family and grows primarily in Southeast Asia. It is an anomaly to a tree. Where a tree grows from small to large and has growth rings, rattan has growth nodules for each season. It can grow up to 300 feet in height before it is harvested and sent to factories that produce the furniture. It is an extremely durable wood that can be easily bent to make the very unique styles that makes rattan furniture so special.

A4: Wicker is best described as anything that is woven. Natural wicker can be made from rattan or any wood type products that are small and easily woven. These are usually woven on rattan frame. - Uh, well, there is no such thing as shampoo for sofas... but you CAN remove the parts with zippers and wash them as directed on the label (usually cold water and soap), and put them in the dryer... and then for the rest of the couch you can put some baking soda to deodorize it for a few hours or a day (depending on what you want - avoid sitting on it at this time), and then just use the portable portion of your vacuum cleaner to vacuum it up - then you will have a beautiful smelling clean couch.

- If you use leather, you will spending hundreds of dollars to reupholster that sofa, and it's unlikely you'll ever get your money out of it. That's only the leather cost too--you'll need strapping, padding and tools to do it yourself, or the cost of the extras for the pro. You can figure at least $500-1000 to have it reupholstered--and you probably won't be able to sell it for anywhere near that. Also, reupholstered antiques don't have a big market--you won't be able to sell it to a shop, and if you try to sell it again on OKorder, or some other site like that, you run the risk of not getting anywhere near the money you would need to recover your costs of re-doing it. It would make a very nice piece for your home if you did it yourself--but not in leather. Finding leather that big, sewing it together in small pieces to cover large areas--that's a job for a professional, not an amateur. You need a special sewing apparatus to successfully sew leather into large pieces. However, there are very inexpensive ways to recover sofas and chairs with FABRIC. At your hardware store, you can find large, one-piece canvas DROP CLOTHS--these are clean, usually a neutral color, and come in huge pieces--often one or two large ones is all you need even for a big sofa. They cost less than $20 each. Padding can be found at any fabric store--as well as new foam for the seats and back. It's fun to reupholster furniture with materials you don't spend a lot of money on--because if you mess up, you're not out a huge amount of cash. You can also use fabric tablecloths, shower curtains or sheets, blankets or bedspreads--all for a lot less money than leather.

- Sadly there is no cure for you leather sofa, unless you are willing to spend loads of money on repairs. You'r better off just getting a new one. As of keeping the kitten off the sofa in the future, try clipping the kittens nails and buy a scratching post. Than everytime the kitten tries to sharpen it's nails on the couch, move it to the scratching post to scratch on. A permanent way of preventing this is getting the kitten permantly declawed. This is only recomended if the cat is an indoors cat, dont get it declawed if it goes outdoors. It needs it's claws to survive outside.

- I do not have dogs but it seems it would be cheaper to put a big dog bed next to the sofa for them . It's cheaper to replace the dog bed than the sofa. My daughter has 3 small rescue dogs and they have there own beds in the family room.
