- Q: I just had tile put down in my kitchen. And I hate it, Some of the squares are cracking and the floor is hard to keep clean.I need to know another flooring that will be good for high traffic in the kitchen. The main flooring under the tile is plywwod that's what all the floors are made of in my house. Is that gonna be a problem no matter what floor I choose?
- I sell floors for a living. Your tile company should have installed backerboard under that tile. If it has been less than a year (most companies have a one year labor warranty) MAKE THEM FIX IT. If their labor warranty is expired, sue them and make them fix it anyways. You paid good money for that floor...make them do it again right. And you can install most any floor covering you want over a plywood floor. If you don't like the cleanability of ceramic (grout can be a pain to maintain), then consider a solid vinyl tile, like Adura from Mannington. That's what I have in my house. Love it, easy to keep. Good luck
- Q: I want to redo my kitchen floor (ugly 1970 looking linoleum) in a 120-year old farm house. I want to do something unique that fits with a primitive look (knotty pine walls, original doors and woodwork). I have a pallet of old slate roof shingles that were salvaged from the barn when it was torn down. Most are still in very good shape and I was wondering if there was any way to incorporate this material into the flooring. Can this be used to tile the floor? I'm looking for anyone with info on using slate for flooring - pros, cons and so on. I'd also like info on recommended thickness, type of adhesive, grout, etc.? I've done ceramic tile and refinished hardwood floors, so I have some basic flooring experience. Thanks in advance for any information!
- There is actually no difference setting a slate floor compared to the ceramic floor.Make sure the base floor is very solid and level. Preferred to lay on concrete or cement board. Can use the same adhesive and grout as with ceramic.Remember grout color can be altered to your preference. Stay with the same thickness as the ceramic. Rent a tile saw. slate can be cut easily.Work out a pattern to the floor before hand. Slate will scratch and scuff easier. but when sealed is beautiful. I think you will be very pleased.
- Q: By "slippery", I don't mean the floors on a gymnasium or the like, I mean laminate floors that are slipperier than average and by traction, I mean average laminate floors.(I'm installing a new dance floor)-What about pirouettes and fouettes and a-la-secondes? (Which is better?)-What about for all sorts of dance?-Mainly, are turns done more properly on more slippery floors or floors with more traction? -Are they easier to do on more slippery floors or not?-Are they easier to do on REALLY slippery floors compared to not as slippery but still a little slippery?*Any additional info would be helpful too or any suggestions etc. :)Thanks in advance!
- Unless the floor is sprung, you really should not be dancing on it to begin with, as you will likely injure yourself. A floor that isn't sprung can put stress on joints, especially ankles and knees, and can lead to shin splints and other injuries. The best surface to dance on is marley. It provides enough traction to prevent slipping, yet does not interfere with turning easily. While certainly not cheap, it is the most reliable flooring to dance on. Most professional ballet academies use marley flooring. Although I cannot stress enough the importance of sprung marley flooring, if you are going to turn (while wearing canvas/leather ballet shoes), I would say the more slippery floor is better. Turning on a floor with too much traction can be more dangerous than one that is a little more slippery. Turning on a floor with too much traction can lead to strained ankles.
- Q: I have been cleaning my laminate flooring with some cleaner just for laminate flooring and my floor keeps looking duller and duller with each cleaning. It is a new floor and I want it to look great not dull and old looking. Any suggestions?
- The best cleaner that we have found is Bona Laminate (or wood) cleaner. This is designed to clean the floor and keep it looking good. Many professional house cleaners purchase this in large quantities from us. Many people have home remedies, however they can damage the floor or make it harder to clean later. For example: vinegar will appear to be clean, however it will leave a residue on the edges of the areas that are wiped, thus residue can build up and make floor not clean as easy in the future.
- Q: Hey,I get ready to renovate the floor in the house, I learned ceramic floor tiles are available in colors that suit many decors. Because ceramic tiles are so long lasting, yet I get tired of the original color but not want to go to the expense of replacing the tiles. That's a good time to think about ways to decorate floor tiles to spruce them up and give them new life. How do I need to cope with the redecoration with the ceramic floor tile?

- Q: My new house has blonde floating floors and I have no idea how to maintain them. My family doesn't eat or drink outside of the kitchen and we typically take off our shoes at the door. I have a shorthaired little dog who isn't going to be very happy when I try to put doggy house slippers on him because I'm so worried about scratching the floor. I'm OCD; it'd drive me crazy! I ll be using protectors under all furniture. What type of cleaner would one use weekly or biweekly for thorough cleaning on this kind of floor? Is it ok to use a Swiffer spray? I detest vinegar. Can I cover the Swiffer with a dryer sheet or will that coat the floor? Thanks
- Sweep floating floors regularly with a broom or dust mop to maintain dust and dirt accumulated through every day traffic. You may also use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to get dust out of corners. Spot clean with a mild cleanser and a damp cloth in the event of spills or other stubborn dirt. Do not use an abrasive scrubber when cleaning dirt and debris from the floor, as this may damage the surface. Never flood the floor with water if you need to mop up a spill, as this will cause permanent damage to the floor. Clean up any puddles of water immediately with a dry cloth or sponge. Clean stubborn nail polish, paint or crusted food stains with a cloth doused in a small amount of nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. Gently wipe at the debris until it comes clean. Do not scrub. Don't panic if wax gets spilled on your floating floor. Wait for the wax to dry and cool, then scrape it away gently with a plastic scraper. After scraping, use a sponge and mild cleanser to wipe the area clean. Use a piece of ice to harden chewing gum and then scrape it off with a plastic scraping tool the same way you would scrape away wax. Follow up by gently wiping the area with a damp sponge and mild cleanser. Check manufacturer instructions before you clean your floor, as most manufacturers provide their own cleaning tips and instructions to help maintain the longevity of your floor. In some cases, manufacturers will provide their own brand of cleaner.
- Q: Does anyone still use the big floor speakers? Ive got my Cerwin Vegas and just wont part with them. They rock.
- Keep them. Large speakers like Cerwin Vegas are actually very efficient - in other words you don't need a lot of power to get a given volume level. That spec is called sensitivity and the big Cerwin Vegas always have a high rating for that. Large speakers have gone out of style only for aesthetic reasons.
- Q: Have small bathroom that needs tile flooring replaced. Don't want large tiles because they show cracks when damaged and they are very obvious. Any genuinely serious recommendations as far as replacing the floor tiles with new floor tiles. Linoleum is not an option.
- Small tiles will show damage also! Larger tiles have fewer grout lines and can leave a floor that looks cleaner and less busy. Setting and making accurate cuts on larger tiles can sometimes be a little challenging. Porcelain tiles and epoxy grout are one of my first recomme4ndations for a bathroom. If your concerned about cracking because the tiles are damaged due to abuse or things dropping on them you may want to consider another flooring option. If your concerned about tiles cracking because the substrate or subfloor is not sound then you should defiantly consider another flooring option. There are some new vinyl options out there that may be a good fit. They are not the cheap stuff and are often referred as LVT or luxury vinyl tiles. G. - Q: What gets ink stains from a pen off the floor?
- Rubbing alcohol on a cloth
- Q: I have recently moved into this house with my fiance, and our children. Well, it does not have linoleum or anything like that on the kitchen floor. The base floor, I guess you would call it... is disgusting. Black. I was wondering if it would be a mistake to mop it, or if I should get a sponge and elbow grease.?I'm going to test a small part, before doing anything, I suppose that would be my best bet. But what would I clean this with?I guess I'm just afraid the dirt will get gunky and build up more.Children are under the age of 4. And, you have to go through the kitchen in order to get to the Bathroom, I'm thinking of having them go to their Nana's for an evening and doing it?Any advise would be greatly appreciated! :)
- Ok, first your land lord is super cheap. Ask him or her about paying for some peal and stick laminate floor tiles for the kitchen. They are cheap, and much cleaner then a painted sub-floor. Plus they are very easy to put in. The paint on the sub-floor should be sealed enough to allow you to mop the floor. Kitchen floors get wet, it is all part of being a kitchen, If the floor can't take being mopped, how is it going to do when you drop a cup of water on it? Just take up the gunk on the floor with some hot water, a cup of white vinegar and a drip of dish soap in a large bucket. Then mop the floor a few times. The gunk will be up, and the kids can stay home. Keep the floor as dry as possible to avoid damage.
