- Q: I just moved into a house a week ago and for the past couple of days weird things have been happening. The night before last my tv in my bedroom changed channel by itself and also I had a playstation remote sitting on top of my playstation and that fell on its own. - If you live in an old house and keep receiving shocks when you turn on the lights, check the outlets. If they have only two holes, you probably have outdated circuitry that isn't grounded. If you live in a house with updated, grounded circuitry and you still get shocks, however, the problem may be a buildup of static electricity from the carpeting. In both cases, the electricity uses you as a path to ground. Before the electric code began to require grounding in all newly installed residential circuitry, houses were wired with two-strand electrical cable with a hot and neutral wire. In this kind of wiring, even a small failure of the wire insulation can expose a person to electric shock. It happens because the person's body completes a circuit between the exposed wiring and the earth. Wearing rubber-soled shoes in the house can reduce the risk of this kind of shock, but a safer solution is to upgrade the wiring. Ground Faults Even if your house has code-approved grounded wiring, you still can get a shock by touching exposed wires or metal that is in contact with them. This rarely happens intentionally. It is more likely to be the result of handling a poorly insulated appliance, or one with a loose internal connection, under conditions that give electricity a path to ground through your body. To prevent this, avoid using old appliances, especially those with loose connections, and install ground fault interrupting (GFI) outlets in the bathroom, kitchen, outdoors and any location where wet conditions increase the risk of unintentional grounding.

- Your laptop will probably work at either voltage - check the label on the external power supply. You may, however, need an adaptor for the outlet plug. For other equipment, you will need a stepdown transformer.

- Q: Hey Guys !I just finished High school and I'm quite certain that Engineering is my first choice, however, I'm still a little bit hesitant. I'm choosing between electrical or mechanical! I think I like both majors and as far as I know Mechanical is the science of moving objects where you can get more hands-on experience , while electrical engineering is more imaginative. You can't really see electricity , thus it's more challenging ! To be honest , I like challenges but I don't want to end up regretting any decisions! Can anyone give me any insights , advices or opinions on both of majors ! What I'm going to study , what can I do , anything that could practically help me decide ! Thanks in advance
- I believe you grasp the essential intellectual difference between the two fields. In the study of both disciplines there are laboratories where you build things. In electrical labs you build circuits, and in mechanical labs you use lathes, drill presses and milling machines to build mechanical devices. When you are out of school and working, you will most likely not be doing anything hands on except inspecting equipment, systems and facilities. Your principal work will be analyzing, documenting, reporting and creating design/construction documents. I had an orientation to both fields (mechanical and electrical) as from the time I was about 13 I rebuilt engines in a machine shop and loved to build all sorts of mechanical things on a farm. But I also liked to design and build receivers, transmitters, amplifiers, etc. Ulitmately, I was attracted more to electrical engineering because it seemed more esoteric and mysterious; but I think I would have been happy and successful in both fields, and possibly even in structural engineering. These fields apply math and the other sciences, and require creativity to find ideal solutions. Civil engineering seemed too mundane to me.
- Q: I am doing a project on electronic baton.I want it to look exactly like baton used by professional orchestra conductor.I stored the electronic components inside the handle of the baton.The problem is the space is very limited.The maximum diameter of the handle only about 18 mm.I need to choose a battery that also stored inside the handle.I want the battery that could work for long time.However what I can see the coin battery that is small only have small energy in it.It will only last for less than 1 hour.It is not good for new product.What can I do to maximize amount of energy so baton can work for longer time? ideally 10+hours or minimum of 5 hours and can fit inside small handle.I dont want to use external power cable.Hope you guys can help me.Really appreciated all of your helps.

For development of new systems scientists of all types. These days things are so complex it is generally a team of multidisciplinary people involved not just one type of engineer
