- Q: explain the difference between an insulator and a conductor
- The main difference between the two, other than a conductor conducts both heat and electricity where is an insulator does not, is the number of electrons located in the outer shell. A conductor has either 1, 3, or 5 electrons in the outer shell. Both copper and silver has only 1 electron in the outer shell. This is why copper is used in house wiring. A insulator generally has either 4 or 8 electrons in the outer shell. Carbon, which has 4 electrons in the outer shell, is a fairly good insulator. This is why carbon is used to make resistors.
- Q: I received a piece of electrical equipment from China which has a power lead with it. It originally had a 2-pin plug which I have stripped to rewire into a 3-pin UK plug but the wires are blue, black and brown! I am confused now as I thought either blue/black could be neutral or black/brown could be live. Didn't expect blue, black and brown in same wire.

- In order to get the most from your Mac as sound generator use a reasonably good audio interface (like the E-mu 0404 usb or something from M-audio). This should be connected to a mixer and this one to the PA system. You also should connect your microphone and guitars to the mixer too, so you can control the volume of each instrument, including the Mac. Although you can connect the mac directly to an Amp I won't do that in order to get control of volume and have better sound. Computers generally don't like live performing. Electric voltage can be unstable (heavy power consumption and lights on-off pattern). Use the appropriate electric equipment to make sure the computer always receive the correct amount of voltage. If not, it can fail and ruin your performance. Make a test where possible.
- Q: I know water can damage electrical equipment, but why can water do this? I'm sure it has to do something with electricity and water. I seek an in-depth answer that will leave me with no doubts, or further questions, if possible.
- Water is a polar molecule and in nature contain impurities which enhance it's conductive ability. So water become a conductor when introduced to electronic devices and electricity follows the path of least resistance, which is no longer the desired circuit. So with the electricity being conducted into places that are not desired it often causes components to fail by overloading them with power. Electrical equipment that gets wet while not connected to power often can be used provided it is allowed to dry out completely before power is applied. For example I have been know to put keyboards in the dishwasher and as long as I wait before I used them afterwards. But pour a cup of coffee into the ketbouard while in use and generally it is toast.
