- Q: I'm wanting to start my own garden and landscape my back yard but i want a good mag with good ideas. Not anything to much but a creative mag.
- I bought Better Homes and garden had useful advice and nice land scalping techniques. Below site have all garden magazines under one head and have information about each magazines you can look there. I bought two magazines subscription at really cheap price from below site and I am happy about that.

- Q: I was wondering if it was okay to grow something small to begin with, on a bed? not on the floor, because i have dogs, and i know they will get in my garden and becausue if i plant them on a bed it will be easier for me to take care of the plants. and easier for me to get rid of the insects. is it expensive to do this? or am i better of buying my own fruits and vegetables? I live in Los Angeles, CA in the city. and was wondering what would be the best time to plant. and finally are there any good books you recommend, and any tips? thank you for your time.
- The biggest part of any good garden is the soil. I had a 16' X 24' raised bed garden. I bought an inexpensive home garden tiller (look up Mantis Home Garden Tiller online. I think mine was about $300), peat moss (to help the soil hold moisture), bagged manure to feed your plants, and an inexpensive book on gardening for beginners (go to the library and save some money on this). Get a small sample of the soil tested to check acidity level. Some veggies and fruits like acidic soil and other don't. Tomatoes are the best to grow in acidic soil. I used cinder blocks to frame the garden bed and got them at a Home Depot or a Lowe's.Plan out an area that you want to locate your garden bed. If you live in a condo or apartment, you can always do container gardening. I've been collecting kitty litter buckets to hold my garden soil since I'm living in an apartment and my yard area is only asphalt. I'm using about 24 kitty litter buckets that had held 35 pounds of kitty litter. Gardening is personally rewarding and fun. Living in RI, I have a shorter growing season than you. Does some online research to find out the earliest you can start planting in your area before you get started. I bought a book called Complete Guide to Vegetables, Fruits Herbs and it cost me about $12.76 at the time. Lots of fruits, berries and vegetables can be purchased as starter or cheater plants. Do you research, plan your area, work or till your soil (if you have a yard), chose your crop type, and have fun! Start small at first, you can always get bigger if you have the room and the money. They make special terracotta pots (either plastic or clay. I got a plastic one cheap.) that you can plant 12 strawberry plants in at one time. Strawberries are great and last year after year if you plant them in mounds in your yard. If you don't have a yard and just use a pot, you'll have to plant them every year (I think. I only planted them in a strawberry pot 1 time). Good Luck!
- Q: I tried to grow an organic garden last year but had no luck, all that happened was bugs eating my food.
- Growing organically for the home gardener is very achievable. Your local nurseries will most likely be your best source of organic fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides.
- Q: I have a small home garden my backyard about 20' by 4'. I have the standard home garden vegetables planted, tomatoes, peppers, basil, celery, etc. I was thinking about planting some red clover in between all the plants to create a nice bed that will choke out weeds so I don't have to weed all the time, put some nitrogen back in soil, and hold in moisture during those long hot dry spells here in New Jersey. The plants are all at least a foot tall now. Would you recommend this? Or would the clover and the vegetables start competing and therefor take away from my harvest? I figured they are all big enough now that the clover will stay well below them. But I don't know if underground there will be a battle going on with the root systems. I already plan on planting the clover in the fall when everything is done growing and then till it in in the spring. Thanks!
- The trick with a cover crop is that you are tilling it into the soil before it flowers to return the nitrogen it pulls from the air into the soil. Planting it between garden plants might not be the best. If you do it, you'll at least want to mow it regularly to keep it from flowering, setting seed, and coming up EVERYWHERE in your garden. Usually cover crops are sown, grown, and tilled under either in the off season (fall/winter/early spring) or for a season in a field that is being rested (growing no crops that you're going to harvest).
- Q: I understand that the shrinking and expanding of the logs is a problem with log homes. Is this less with cedar logs? Is it ok to mix log types such as cedar and oak? Is there a sealer that will stop the logs from getting enough moister to expand?Have any of you ever used cement between the logs like the older style cabins had? Any body out there a log home builder?I have seen homes with adjustment bolts to at the top of the walls to compensate for the expansion. But i do not see that in many photos in the log home magazines, does this mean they are just shooting the photos from angles that will not allow the viewer to see the bolts?............. And in reality all log homes have these bolts, and it is unavoidable or what? If anyone can help me with this I would be thankful.
- I okorder /... Doing an online search of log house issues brought up those links for me, and many more. So if you do the same, you can find even MORE information to help you figure out what you need to know.
- Q: I am doing a traveling boutique featuring children's and a few womens clothing and accessories some of which I make and some I buy. What I am trying to figure out is my sales are pretty good at the shows I've done so far but I was hoping to get outside of my friends to hold shows and have not been successful in booking new shows. What kind of incentives should I do? I offered a tiered plan based on sales some free some discounted based on $ volumn. Should I make something that is for hosts only? Any advise related to this would be helpful. Is it okay to ask the host to help? Keep in mind that I do not do a presentation--it is an open house for a couple of hours and set up like a boutique in someones living room.
- Have you considered setting up a booth at a County Fair or Home Garden Show? At least check out the other vendors there and ask what kind of incentives they offer if people sign up to book shows. Some have a drawing for a free gift basket, and at the bottom of the card people can check boxes indicating that they want more information about booking a party. (Have your planner handy; it is even better if you can book them on the spot.)
- Q: I watched a show about 2 years ago and a lady made a cool planter box out of cement that takes a month or so to dry. Then she put a rock garden and other succulants and I would love to watch that again so I can make one. Thanks.
- How funny! I do remember that but I think I saw it in a women's magazine. There was a kit that you could send off for and I think you molded the planter around something else and then it dry forever! I seem to recall that it was cement mixed with perlite, that stuff you usually mix in potting soil. Seems like you could just purchase some Quik Crete at the Home Depot and make a mess on your own! LOL Let me know if you do, I always wanted to make one as well!
- Q: I was wondering if anybody has heard of Home and Garden Party and if anybody was interested in a shopping spree!??
- No, I haven't heard of a Home and Garden Party, and who wouldn't want a shopping spree.
