You need to be cautious about floors that will consistently get wet which would cause you problems with the paint and urethane. Also, if you paint and seal your floor I would treat it more like a wood floor as far as cleaning is concerned since you're now just going to be cleaning a urethane surface. Lastly, can I offer some free advice? Once you start painting that floor there is no turning back. It would be almost impossible to remove the paint if you don't like the way it looks and you would probably just have to rip the flooor out or put another flooring over the top of it as Toffy mentioned. If I was thinking about doing this, I would get some similar tiles to what you have and just lay them on a piece of plywood in the garage and do a quick grout job. It doesn't have to be perfect. I would do some testing with paint and urethane to see how it looks and how well it will hold up to wear.

Q:I have a new bathtub with Durock cement board installed around it and I‘m ready for tile. I just got a guy out to give me an estimate for doing the tile work around the tub and he said the Durock would have to be primed first. I‘ve heard you‘re supposed to put the tile directly on the Durock, not paint it. Now I don‘t know what to do. Is he wrong? If he‘s wrong, do I hire someone else or just question him? The whole reason is to bond to the cement substance of the Durock or cement board. There are times or situations that you need to water proof cement board , but that would be a different situation. Q:I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? In otherwords: in total, how much would I pay to have the entire apartment tiled in ceramic vs. vinyl? Please note I am not a DIY person AT ALL so approximate labor prices are crucial. Thanks!: vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape,you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day,whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........

Q:can I surface over my white tile flooring granet??: If they are vinyl tiles stuck to the subfloor and you put another substrate, such as 1/2 cement board, yes you can. If the vinyl tiles are over another type subfloor, such as luan, then no, the vinyl and its substrate must come up and then the proper subflooring put down over the subfloor, correctly and then tile. If its a self stick tile, over slab, it must come up. If its a glued down vinyl tile over slab and bonded well, there are proper ways to put ceramic over this. If your doing ceramic over ceramic, and the ceramic is down well and no signs of cracks or loose tiles, again there are proper ways of putting ceramic ( or granite) over ceramic.
