I respectfully suggest you shouldn't pay $1000 to have $50 of tile installed -- if you want to pay $14 per foot for installation, I'd go for $6 - 8 per foot tile. Generally 2/3 of the bid should be labor, 1/3 material. In tile work, labor includes prep, mastic, grout, and cleanup -- everything but the tile itself.

Q: I have hot water radiant heat in a concrete slab that leaks occasionally so I can‘t put carpet on it. Do I dare put ceramic tile over it? Maybe the tile would keep the moisture down.: You could I would do some research though you need to make sure its not a water soluble adhesive and that the ceramic tile wont get super hot. I know that ceramic is very hard and it should stand up. I am not sure about the adhesive though you would have to ask someone about that. Some one at like Lowe's or home depot should be able to tell you that though. Lay some of the tile out and let it sit on the floor see if it is the best material to use for tile and if it holds the heat like you want it to.

Q: I like the original quarry tiled floor from our 60‘s kitchen, but they are quite badly stained. I can‘t pretend they have any historic value, or even were particularly well laid, so on balance should I1) Replace with new tiles, perhaps up to a higher standard2) Get a specialist to restore them to something approaching their original stateWhich will cost more, and what would you do?: Quarry tiles are made from unrefined extruded, high silica alumina clay that gets pressed into the desired form and hard burnt. They are hard and durable but have a softer composition than ceramic tiles. It is an unglazed form of tile, which comes in a natural colour selection, red, brown and beiges. A good and cheap place to start is to try using raw linseed oil. This will usually remove most of your tough stains. You want to be careful about using acids on real quarry tile because they are very porous and acids could etch your tiles permanently. If the linseed oil doesn't do the trick then a more expensive alternative would be using Lithofin Victorian Tiled Floor Restorer and a good sealer is HG Golvpolish. You should be able to get these from good tile retailers. If the tiles are laid on earth, or on a lime bed on earth, they should not be sealed as they need to breath to avoid damp being trapped. The original tile finish was a clear oil and of course this still allows the tile to breath. Try Slate Dressing from a fireplace shop, this is colourless and will give a richness to the tiles.. We already tore the carpet up and we weren‘t sure if we should clean the carpet adhesive off the ceramic tiles, or remove the tiles from the concrete.: You ll have to remove the tile so any lines won t telescope thru .There is a process to coat over the tile but I m against it. You can t take the tile up and scrape the thin set down or sweep well and pour a self leveling compound over all the thin set ridges.Scraping down the thin set is a hard ,slow ,dusty , dirty, process but well worth it it the long run. Q: can you paint over bathroom tiles? if so what kind do i need?: Yes, there is tile/ceramic paint- several brands- all stocked by home improvement stores. The key element is the prepping. The old tiles and grouting need to be clean -and then cleaned again with the manufacturers suggested cleaner. You can decorate tiles, or change the color of the entire wall. Once the paint is dry, it is waterproof . It takes a bit of time, but with care, you should be able to do almost all the cleaning prep the day before and then just do the final cleaning and paint on the project day. Worst case, do one wall at time. It does not hurt to practice the entire process on one tile- preferably the tile hardest to see when you are on the outside looking in.
