- Q: Want to construct a patio cover approx. 20 feet long. Only want to use a 6x6 or 8x8 post at each end. What size steel i-beam would I have to use to carry the load???
- Probably the reason some contractors don't like this idea is that your new built-up beam, being only 6 tall, is not going to allow the joists above to attach effectively. The triple microlam with steel plates is sooooooo overkill in strength, but doesn't have the height to allow the floor joists to proberly attach. Your span is not so great that a built-up beam wouldn't work great. Assuming that your second floor joists are 2 x 10, I would use 2- 2 x 10 with 1/2 plywood sandwiched between. This is all that you really need.
- Q: How are steel coils secured during transportation?
- Steel coils are typically secured during transportation using metal bands or straps, which are tightly fastened around the coils to prevent them from shifting or falling off. Additionally, wooden blocks or dunnage may be used to provide stability and prevent movement within the transportation container.
- Q: why does steel have a density range when other metals do not?
- Steel is not a pure element it is an alloy. Steel is primarily iron but it has many elements blended in that change it's density including carbon, silicon, nickel, chrome, etc. Aluminum and copper , magnesium and so forth can be the pure element or they can be alloys too. If they are alloys, then their densities vary also
- Q: What are the common manufacturing defects in steel coils?
- Common manufacturing defects in steel coils include surface defects such as scratches, pits, and dents, as well as internal defects like inclusions, cracks, and voids. Other common defects can include uneven thickness, waviness, and coil set.
- Q: What are the dimensions of steel coils used in the railway equipment industry?
- The dimensions of steel coils used in the railway equipment industry can vary depending on the specific application and requirements. However, some common dimensions for steel coils used in this industry are typically around 3 to 5 feet in width and 10 to 15 feet in length. The thickness of the steel coils can vary as well, ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 inches. It is important to note that these dimensions are not fixed and may vary based on the specific needs of the railway equipment industry, such as the type of equipment being manufactured or the specific function of the steel coils.
- Q: What are the main factors that affect the flatness of steel coils?
- The main factors that affect the flatness of steel coils include the quality of the raw material used, the thickness and width of the coil, the temperature and humidity during the manufacturing process, the tension applied during coiling, and the cooling and leveling processes employed.
- Q: What is the minimum temperature that steel coils can withstand?
- The minimum temperature that steel coils can typically withstand without undergoing significant changes in their physical properties is around -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit). However, this can vary depending on the specific type and grade of steel used in the coils.
- Q: What are the different types of steel coatings for coils?
- There are several different types of steel coatings for coils, including galvanized coatings, galvannealed coatings, aluminized coatings, and organic coatings.
- Q: Climbing ropes used by mountaineers are usually made of nylon. Would steel cable of equal strength as the nylon be just as good? What advantages and disadvantages would it have compared to the nylon?
- steel is NOT as flexible and much slipperier if you fall the nylon stretches to slow the victim but a steel cable would stop short and kill you
- Q: What are the different surface finishes available for steel coils?
- There are several different surface finishes available for steel coils, including hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized, coated, and painted finishes. Each finish has its own unique properties and benefits, such as improved corrosion resistance, enhanced aesthetic appeal, or increased durability. These different finishes allow manufacturers to meet specific requirements and applications for steel coils in various industries.
