PORTLAND CEMENT

Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world, used as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and most non-specialty grout.

It is a fine powder produced by heating materials in a kiln to form what is called clinker, grinding the clinker, and adding small amounts of other materials.

Several types of Portland cement are available with the most common being called ordinary Portland cement (OPC) which is grey in color, but a white Portland cement is also available.

Such application as pre-cast panels and systems, cast-in-place, masonry units, tilt-up panel systems, roofing tiles, terrazzo floors, highway median barriers, tile grout, swimming pools, stucco, culture stone, colored masonry products, cement paints and coatings, and ornamental precast concrete items.

What Is Cement Used For
Q: if it is is it renewable or nonrenewable?
Cement is a nonrenewable resource made from limestone. Limestone is comprised of mostly Calcium Carbonate.(CaCO3) a naturally occurring rock type. It is mine from the ground in open quarries or underground mines. It is then ground very finely and heated to make it into cement powder. Once it is used, it is used.
Q: we just put wooden post into the ground and put cement around it a couple of days ago, and we heard that cement could eat the wood, and we did not put plastic on the end of them.
cement does not eat wood water sits in the hole you cemented and rots the wood
Q: While cleaning out the garage of a home I recently bought, I found a sealed unlabeled tub with a cement (or concrete) mixture inside. Is there a way to tell if it is Portland, Quickrete, Sakrete, or whatever? Thanks.
It really don't matter what it is, sealed or not, all the products you mentioned are only good for so long then break down and then are all called by one name. Garbage. As you have no idea as to how old it is, thats the name of it.Garbage
Q: How Fireproof Is Cement? I Tryed To Make A Mold For Metal Casting Out Of It, But It Fell To Pieces. Did I Make It Wrong, Or Is Cement No Good For 1100?C+ ??
It depends on how long it has been there, and if removing the section would make the driveway unusable. If it has been there a long time, you are not likely to be able to do anything about it. There are several doctrines that would make this so. If you want to get a portion removed, i would talk to them first. If they get a lawyer, you will be fighting this for a long time, so it is best to just try diplomacy first. Whatever you do, don't go out there with a jackhammer and start breaking concrete. This is a great way to end up in bigger trouble. Before you start, you will need an accurate survey as well.
Q: what is the best kind of cement for filling cracks in foundations?
Epoxy
Q: How come i can kickflip on grass but not on cement?
You might not be commited enough. When I was learning varials I had them nailed on grass. But I wussed out once I did them on cement. Once you commit and do it one time. You WILL land the next.
Q: Here in the US they use sheet rock and the houses are so flimsy, but in DR they build them so strong and it's 100% cement. Why is that?
Just an old world way of doing things... more durable. Plus, I don't think US building materials could withstand the continual beating those houses get from the salt, sand, wind, and rain off the Caribbean sea. I look at pictures of houses for sale down there and some of them, even the cement and cinder block ones get really jacked up by the weather conditions. It's beautiful in the Caribbean, but the weather is rough. What Charlie says is true too...about the insects and mold.
Q: no tile in shower/bath surroundPosted by erik0619 on January 6th, 2006 07:42 AMPost Reply | Watch this PostI am renovating my bathroom. I don't want to put up new tile in the shower. Can I just use cement board and some type of paint so that the walls and the shower walls in the bath all look the same? I've already put up the cement board and taped off the seams what do I use in the seams? What type of paint or coating can take constant showering?
No. Cement board is meant to be used as a backer, not a finished wall. Your options are to tile it or put up some sort of fiberglass or acrylic wall or surround.
Q: Which did the Romans invent? Concrete or Cement?
Both. Ever since civilizations first started to build, we've sought a material that would bind stones into a solid, formed mass. The Assyrians and Babylonians used clay for this purpose, and the Egyptians advanced to the discovery of lime and gypsum mortar as a binding agent for building such structures as the Pyramids. The Greeks made further improvements and finally the Romans developed a cement that produced structures of remarkable durability. Most of the building foundations in the Roman Forum were constructed of a form of concrete, placed in some locations to a depth of 12 feet. The great Roman baths built about 27 B.C., the Coliseum, and the huge Basilica of Constantine are examples of early Roman architecture in which cement mortar was used. Roman Formula The secret of Roman success in making cement was traced to the mixing of slaked lime with pozzolana, a volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius. This process produced a cement capable of hardening under water. During the Middle Ages this art was lost and it was not until the scientific spirit of inquiry revived that we rediscovered the secret of hydraulic cement -- cement that will harden under water.
