Q: okay so i wanted to make a rocky background that would fit my tank specifiaclly. the only thing in the tank is a fire belly newt. what kinds of cement are safe to use for that purpose or are there any like sealants that you can put over the cement so that chemicals wont leak out into the water?
Its not chemicals that you need to worry about with cement (I take it you are referring to concrete?) its the pH balance and the alkalinity of the water you need to worry about, as concrete is made of limestone that will dissolve in the water and raise the hardness and alkalinity of your tank. If you have South American fish like tetras that prefer soft, slightly acidic water, concrete landscaping will not be appreciated. African cichlids, which prefer hard, alkaline water, will have no problem with this arrangement. You can use any epoxy putty to adhere fixtures in your tank together. Most pet stores will also sell tubes of aquarium sealant that is 100% safe when dry.
Q: I have vinyl tiles in my kitchen and I wanted to replace it with marble tiles. Do I have to remove the vinyl tiles first or can I just go over it with cement? Thanks.
Marble tiles require a very rigid support system. Or they will crack. The recommended deflection is L/720 whereas typical construction is rated at L/360 - twice as flexible. *Ceramic* tile is useable on an L/360 structure when a properly installed cement backer board is beneath it. Unless the floor of your kitchen is a concrete slab, I am willing to bet that it will deflect too much for a satisfactory marble tile installation without substantial beefing up of the floor structure. As for your original question, the answer is no, but you will need to lay cement backer board (Hardie backer, Durock, etc.) which will provide a proper surface for the thinset mortar to adhere to which will solve a small portion of the problem. But, the backer board won't do anything to solve the deflection problem along the floor joists, only between them. What those deflection limits mean is that for L/720, a 10 foot floor span will move 120/720=1/6 inch under maximum design loads. For the L/360 case, the movement is 1/3 inch or about 5/16.
Q: My basement shower is basically just a cement slab with a drain and fiberglass walls. What's a rough ballpark cost estimate to tear out the cement shower and replace it with a modern glass stall and/or a tile shower?
800.00 to skys the limit thats a pre engineered pre fab glass enclosure installed
Q: What is the good introduction for cement?
Actually cement is nothing but a normal paste or binder.. there is a setting time of a cement .. time of every cement varies depending on the GYPSUM used. In the most general sense of the word, a cement is a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together. The word cement traces to the Romans, who used the term opus caementicium to describe masonry which resembled concrete and was made from crushed rock with burnt lime as binder. The volcanic ash and pulverized brick additives which were added to the burnt lime to obtain a hydraulic binder were later referred to as cementum, cimentum, c?ment and cement.
Q: I would like to close up my a/c for winter. I have the insulation and plastic but do not know how to attach it to my cement walls. Cellophane tape, duct tape, electric tape and masking tape have all proved to fail (and pretty quickly too). Any suggestions from you wonderful Yahoo people? I would be grateful.
If the cement is dry, dry brush it briskly and apply a 2 strip of double sided tape like they use for carpets. The other choice is to use that Velcro tape. It comes in a roll in a dispenser. It has tremendous holding power. A third choice would be to drill some 3/16 plastic plug holes, then drill a matching piece of 1x2. The 1x2's will hold the plastic in place when you screw the wood to the cement wall. Hope this helps.
Q: if a ball was dropped on cement and an identical ball was dropped on stretchy rubber, which scenario would result in the most force acting on the ball?
impulse = change in momentum F delta(t) = m delta(v) dropped on cement the ball would essentially lose all its momentum and the time (t) would be very short so F would be high dropped on rubber assuming a good bounce back the change in momentum would be greater because the result would be going back up at some v so impulse is greater but time would also be longer and we would have to know the time it took to bounce on the rubber and the time it took to stop on the cement to make a comparison of forces generally speaking we might reasonably expect the rubber landing to involve less force because we can imagine the difference between jumping from a height onto concrete versus jumping onto a trampoline I would anticipate that the time of contact on the trampoline would be many, many times greater than the time it would take to stop when hitting the concrete. If someone gives you a good response, please consider giving a best answer. This is the only reward we get.
Q: i am currently building a pond, but instead of using pond liner, we are using cement, with this still keep it sealed from leakage? (the cement will have no joints, all one peice)
Concrete is unforgiving and will crack. And it is not repairable. I recommend using a flexible liner no matter where you live. It's cheaper and will last for 20 years at least. Sealing the concrete adds another huge cost to the building of the pond. Stick with a butyl liner.
Q: I need the type of soil and general specification
You need to have a soil type that has the consistency of sand. Anything dry and grainy... Stay away from clayish substances where the soil tends to stick together because the cement cannot go through them. Usually the ratio I can give for a good building block is about 6 parts of sand, 2 parts cement and 1 part of water (or less depending on the consistency). It should feel like the consistency where it can be easily molded but not soggier than brownies. Use portland cement...
Q: I want to build a 5000 gallon pond using cement, but I am kind of having trouble finding resources on how to do this.I would like to know how to install an externail pump, and how do I do the drain???How do I put the plumbing in? Would this be buildt pretty similar to a pool? What has to be done to the cement to make it safe for fish?Would making it out of cement be cheaper than liner? There are no rocks in FL, so we are going to have a company come out and quot;makequot; the rocks for us. They do a FABULOUS job sculpting rocks from rebar and cement. I would have to have a cement pool in order to have them do this, though. So that is why it needs to be out of cement. If you can find ANY resources for me on how to do any of this, Id be eternally greatful! Im so excited to get my pond going!!!!
it doesn't sound like you've given this enough thought, if not done correctly the first time you can REALLY end up with a problem please go to pet shop or garden shop or library and get books on garden ponds, they will tell you everything you need to know it's too involved to go into on this forum
