- Q: If you were a single woman with no man around, how would you fix a hole in the ceiling from water damage? And the roof? On a budget. Is this possible for a small woman to do this job by herself? Can someone give me step by step instructions? Photo of the damage attatched.
- First you need to diagnose the problem of why the water came in to begin with, and resolve it if you can. Without doing that, your ceiling repair is just going to have to be done over again. The other ceiling repair suggestions are good - but they don't speak to the cause of the leak. You don't say what the roof above it looks like, or where you live. Is it flat? Is it sloped? Is it shingled or metal? Can you get access to it. without killing yourself? You do NOT want to be getting out on the roof by yourself; you at least need to have someone holding the ladder, and if it's very steeply pitched, this is really not something you should contemplate doing by yourself. It may simply be due to weather conditions: the snow on the roofs can create ice dams, where the melting water re-freezes and gets shoved underneath the roof shingles. If there is no waterproof underlayment underneath the roof shingles, then the water can seep in under the roof shingles. If this is what's happening, the only thing you can try doing now is to keep your roof as clear as you can. A roof rake (special tool, not an actual rake) can be used to clear the snow away from as far up as can be reached, and it can help prevent ice dams. But frankly, this weather is so bad, that's still not a fail safe. You don't say if you own or rent. If you are renting, this should be up to the landlord to fix, and should not be your problem.
- Q: What is the difference between ultrafine glass fiber cotton and centrifugal glass wool?
- Ultra - fine glass wool Glass wool insulation material is quartz sand, feldspar, sodium silicate, boric acid as the main raw material. After high temperature melting made of less than 2um fiber cotton, and then add thermosetting resin adhesive pressure high temperature stereotypes to create a variety of shapes, specifications of the board, felt, pipe products. The surface can also be affixed with aluminum foil or PVC film. The product has a light weight, thermal conductivity, absorption coefficient, flame retardant performance. Can be widely used in thermal equipment, air conditioning, temperature, hot and cold pipes, oven drying room, cold storage and building insulation, insulation, noise and so on.
- Q: Hi, about 2 weeks ago I was in my ex boyfriend's attic (with his permission! lol) and he noticed a crack, which turned into a hole when I slipped and almost fell through into the bedroom! If you lie in bed you can now see right through to the attic; while it could be considered a design feature, my ex isn't keen on it :-) It's not very big, probably only 1.5ft square if that but obviously the plaster is missing, one of the lathes (think that's what they're called; the thin pieces of wood just behind the plaster) is broken in half and poking throught he hole and little bits of the fibreglass indsulation are falling down. My ex told his landlord who said it would cost ?150 to repair the damage, but I'm convinced my ex could do it himself...but how? Any ideas? I have been offered a large piece of plasterboard, could he use this in any way and would he have to enlarge the hole to replace the entire lathe? How does he replaster...etc - help please!
- with chalk and soil.
- Q: Upstairs noise how can we install sound insulation material can have effect?
- In their own sound insulation ceiling, the use of keel overhead, with the use of sound-absorbing cotton, noise insulation or noise board and other sound insulation materials, reduce the noise downstairs noise down (for upstairs can not handle this method to do more)
- Q: has any one used corrugated metal (used comonly on barn roofs and in resturant decor). for a ceiling in a basement. ( will be in bar-living-game open area) want to have access and hate drop ceilings. planning on just screwing to joist. would like to know if you are happy with and if you have any pictures.
- Plan B, if you don't go with the metal, we used styrofoam sheets on our basement ceiling and screwed on wooden molding between them so they could slide out easy for access. It was really cheap, it looks like a textured ceiling, you could never tell it was styrofoam unless you touched it. It was also easy to put up, very light and very easy to cut with a razor knife.
- Q: We just had our first child, and his room is right above the garage. It is noticebly colder in his room, especially the floor. I used the plastic window kits and that helped, however, the floor is still extremely cold and I would like to at least check the insulation in the garage ceiling. Right now there is drywall on the ceiling, but I have no qualms about ripping it down, not real worried what it looks like. What should I look for...I believe there is very old (50 years) fiberglass insulation but i'm not 100% sure. If there is the old insulation there...should I look to replace it? If so, with what R value...Is this a project that someone without specific experience in the field could complete? I'm pretty handy but certainly not a pro. I'm not worried at all how it looks in the garage.
- thats a good question i would definetly insulate the garage but see if theres a special garage insulation maybe something that has a vapor barrier against car fumes or sometime of extra fire resistant stuff i know they have a noise reducing insulation

- Q: We have removed our rough sawn cedar from our cathedral ceiling in our 80's home. We found fiberglass insulation and 2x6 joists (the roof is directly above). The first electrician came out before we removed the ceiling and assumed there was no insulation and said we needed to get spray insulation because of the condensation can lights can cause. The other electrician we called out came after we removed the ceiling and did not say anything about condensation. Neither said anything about ice dams. I am seeing all this pretty scary stuff when doing my research, and am thinking we shouldn't put in recessed lighting now! We live in Wyoming where the climate can be pretty cold, but is usually very dry.So, if we use LED lamps and IC airtight housings, will the heat transfer really be bad enough to cause condensation and/or ice dams? Would it help to put some foam board between the shallow housings and the roofing substrate (if it fits)? We are only planning on putting up 6 6" lights in a 10x20 room...
