- Q: We are building a tile shower and we have gotten it framed the way we want it. We haven‘t installed the backerboard or tiles yet, just the studs are placed. Do we need to backerboard and tile the sides where the door will be, or can we install the shower door directly to the bare wood studs?

- The metal frame that divides the tile into different sections is made from strips of metal carefully bent and soldered into place. I have seen steel ones and also brass mold patterns. The key to it is to have the bottom of the strips perfectly flat and level so that when you pour in the liquid cement mix, each color stays in its own compartment. Cutting and installing ceramic tile around doorways should not be seen as a daunting task.Before you begin, you will want to first take careful measurements at your doorway. Once you have the proper measurements, you will then want to cut your tile using a masonry saw. Cut your tiles to fit the measurements of your doorway and lay them in the doorway as you cut them to help you keep track of where each tile should go. you can find some good tile saws in my source site.

- There is no GOOD way to do this. And you are right in that tiling over tile is a bad idea. You could go over it with a product like DuraCeramic, which would only raise the floor level up a small amount, but be aware that anything you put over that surface will likely make the existing surface unusable forevermore and you might regret it someday. The real solution would be to demo the existing tile and install new tile.

- Q: I have laminate over plywood right now in a bathroom. I‘d like to peel that off and lay tile down. Do I need the cement board or can I just put the tiles right on the plywood? It would save a lot of time and energy if I can just lay the tiles on the existing wood.
- You can tile right over the plywood. It may be difficult getting the laminate off, but if it is 40 or 50 years old, it will be easier. Take an old knife and stick it under the edge of the laminate and see how easily the laminate comes loose. If it's easy, go for it. You may end up with some gouges in the wood, but that won't hurt anything if you're tiling over it. The thinset tile adhesive will fill in any gouges. Good luck! It's fun, and remember this: Grout takes away the sins of the tile, so if the tile looks rough once it's down, the grout will fix it beautifully. Have fun, too.

Can you attach the tiles to backerboard or Durrock on the ground first and then glue the whole ceiling into place with 2x4 proping it up or leave a couple tiles out to also catch a few screws with the construction adhesive. later you can touch up around the edges and grout If NotHow about contact cement use alot of it though not a thin coat. OH and don't use mortar use construction adhesive it will actually stick and better then mastic. Mortar is for the floor

- You don t say what kind of tile your laying. is it self stacking? you need a space? Get the right kind for the tile you have? Using the right kind of trowel for tile? There s to many questions to try and answer them all here, but you basic question was can you do the same tile on the walls? Yes you can w/ planning and if the tile has a trim pc to finish off the sides and top. You need to figure what kind of trim is available for that tile. If it s just a flat trim then you need to take out the dry wall and add cement board in it s place the same height as the tile. Or just a bit below as to cover over the edge of the drywall. Soap dishes and or corner shelves are very handy but can be a challenge for 1st timers.. GL
