- Q: I have a rental that currently has sheet vinyl in the kitchen that is in bad shape. I am considering putting in self adhesive floor tiles over the vinyl. I have installed similar flooring in a bathroom but used inexpensive tiles. It looked good, but the tiles tended to slide. I‘m thinking it was because I used bargain tiles rather than better quality.I just need comments as to longevity and problems you might have encoutered with self adhesive tiles. Also, do you have any particular brand or type you recommend?
- I have used them for over 10 yrs now with NO PROBLEMS. Maybe your not taking the time to prep your floor and we all know the prep is very important. I personally would take that vinyl out and lay on your sub floor. As in any product if you take the time to read and follow their directions you'll be fine. I not only use this type of tile in my own home but clients too. I ripped out a nice ceramic tile in a doctors house and put this tile in its place, 2 baths and it's been 3 yrs now and no problems. good luck.

- Not everyone is in the market for tile designs in 24 kt. gold. I assume you've checked around in your area. If no one knew, how else would they give you an answer without doing a search? At least they would be taking the time and making an effort to help you find what you're looking for.
- Q: There was actually only a tub there and no shower, so the walls are all plaster. I know that before I tile I need a different backerboard, meaning the plaster goes at least to a point. Any hints, tips, directions, and suggestions on how to do the job?
- If okorder /... If you haven't done tile before, then you may want to hire someone. Even through Schluter's Kerdi system makes the shower a lot easier, I wouldn't recommend that you take on this project without a bit experience with tile. A shower even with this simple system is one of the hardest tile projects there is. But if you have tiled backsplashes or tub surrounds then get the CD-ROM or video, and study it, and go for it. My suggestion is make sure you run the tile plumb and level, get that Kerdi-Mat flat and well bonded, you are going to have to float the curb (the mat when lapped itself, builds up a ridge, you'll see) so use a straight edge. Use a mosaic two inch for the floor. Caulk the inside corners. A simpler thing would be to get a fiberglass pan, and just tile the walls. You still need to waterproof the walls with Kerdi-Mat or a combination of concrete board over tar-paper. An excellent book is Setting Tile by Micheal Bryne. It will show more details than a describe here. Good Luck
- Q: I would like to install laminated flooring in my kitchen. Two of the wall are tiled. Is it possible to undercut these tiles or is there an easier method to do a neat installation?
- The box usually has pretty good instructions on it, otherwise ask the people where you bought the tiles. You can use the tiles themselves as spacers between the wall and the tiles so that there is a gap. Just place them on edge. Or you can get plastic spacers from any DIY store. This is to leave room for expansion so the tiles don't warp. You can then cover the gap with floor trim. Good luck. It is fairly easy.
- Q: just had a tile floor laid and i noticed some were higher than the one next to it in about 6 tiles. my husband says every house will have those. does yours?
- Having the tiles uneven on a new installation is not right. Couple reasons to cause this and should have been caught by the installer.They are more than likely not loose but since they are uneven, your more than likely to chip the edges over time. Get the installer back and have it fixed. Tile should be perfectly flat. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

I live in a company apartment and it is very important that it is kept sparkling clean. There are very pale, large, limestone tiles throughout with matching grout. Thank you.
- There is fairly new cleaning technology out that uses peroxide based cleaners, which do an excellent job if used on a regular basis. I have only seen it in the commercial sector so far, but it replaces alot of the cleaning supplies used for numerous tasks. Hopefully it will soon come out for residential use. The biggest upside? It is 100% environmentally safe. Go to a custodial supply distributor to see if they carry some. Spartan Chemical has a product called Clean by Peroxy.
