- Q: do everything and what thickness of mortar between the tiles and the floor should be observed
- If the bathroom has timber floor boards with a covering on top remove any plastic tiles or old carpets and lay thin plywood on top screwed down to the floorboards as a solid base for the new tiles (you omit this if the bathroom has a concrete floor) then either buy some floor tiles adhesive (for plastic tiles) or mix some tile cement (for ceramic tiles) spread the adhesive /tile cement on the floor base using a slotted trowel that applies the adhesive/cement in rows, then follow the adhesive/cement makers instructions to leave for a period - then lay the plastic tiles edges butting or ceramic tiles with plastic spacers to allow for the grout to be added between the tiles, start from the back working obviously towards the door. You can unscrew the toilet pan and slide tiles underneath likewise the bathtub panels remove to fit the tiles underneath (note you will have to trim the bathtub panel so it can be re fitted over the tiles, you may wish to tile up to baseboards (skirting UK) or remove them and tile underneath. As you can see this job is quite involved -do you have good diy skills? Otherwise leave to a pro to tile it for you maybe you can buy the tiles and he lays them?
- Q: I want to put vinyl tiles on my pre-existing ceramic tiles but in some areas there is no ceramic tiles and I need something to fill in the gap to make my floors even when I put on the vinyl tile. What should I use? Then when my floors are even how do i put my tiles?
- With all due respect; that wasn't a good idea to begin with. If asked I'd turn down the job. First of all the grout lines should have been considered; and the depression that exists. I'll assume you intend to BUTT each sticky tile to any other. At some pint; some portion of that will come in contact with grout lines. In a normal process of just walking on the vinyl tiles; the grout lines will become evident; under the vinyl. Essentially a glazed ceramic tile is glass; and is not pourous, or even designed to adhere anything to it. For a transition area you could either install more tile first, or fill the transition; perhaps even feathering it? Without knowing the WHERE of the gaps; it may not be aesthetically suitable in any case. To more directly answer your Q; but so much not if favor of stick on anything; I offer this. I do it or suggest it every time. Get a can of contact cement; regular base or water base. Peel the paper from the back of each tile. Brush or roll contact cement to the back of the tile as well as the surface to be covered. Let air dry, then stick, press, and hope. Steven Wolf
- Q: I have a tile floor in a basement bathroom. These are small 2 inch tiles and I would like larger 8 by 8 inch tiles on the floor. Do I need to remove the old tile or can the new tile be laid right over the old tile? The subloor is concrete slab.
- You could if that is what you really want to do. You will need to spread a layer of leveling cement over them to give you a nice flat surface to work from.
- Q: We have a hardwood floor in our bathroom, and because it gets too damp, we want to install vinyl tiles on top of the hardwood floor. But I cannot imagine vinyl sticking to wood - can it be done successfully? Any glue tips??
- If you put a vinyl tile on a hard wood weather you varnish it or seal it or any thing, The lines in the hardwood will telescope through and show right through the vinyl in no time.. Plus the natural expansion and contraction of wood will break the glue bond of the vinyl Any flooring questions you can e mail me through my avatar GL
- Q: i know NOTHING about how to do it or what i need. Could someone just list all the tools and equipment i would need to buy or rent to complete this job myself? ie, tiles, tile cutter, ?, ?, ?... etc. thanks.
- You'd probably need a tile cutter, wet-saw would be best if the job is medium or larger. Otherwise a manual tile cutter would work, just more labor intensive. Wet-saws can be bought at discount stores for as little as 20 bucks. Some tile nippers will help remove small bits of tile or small cuts, etc. Your prep work will call for maybe snap line to mark straight lines for tile placement. Using a stright-edge will also help keep your tile straight, and using the plastic grout inserts will ensure you keep a uniform thickness between your tiles (size of inserts depends on how wide your grout lines will be). You'll need a float or trowel to spread the mortar or mastic. Once it's spread, you set your tile one it while mortar is wet. You'll need a water bucket with large sponge to wipe down the tiles after they've been set. This not only cleans the tiles, but levels the grout to a final depth as well. Wipe it while wet and it's fairly easy - let it dry and it's almost impossible to smooth your grout. I suggest you search the web or get a book on tiling basics. The job is really straight-forward and fairly simple. Just familiarize yourself with the basic concepts and tips for doing the job. Tiling is far easier than most folks believe it to be. It's just a matter of rolling up one's sleeves and begining the job. Finally, you'll need six-pack of beer when the job is finished. Good luck
- Q: while laying new floor of tiles, i‘m confused above, which tiles are more durable for floor: homogenized floor tiles or glazed floor tiles, or granite floor tiles
- In a home setting it rally doesn t matter what you use. They ll all out last us if they are properly set. And setting is the key from the floor prep to the glueing of the tile with thin set. Two basic type of porcelains, full bodied porcelains where the color goes through out. The backing is basically the same colored as the front. Then you have glazed porcelains where the tile body is porcelain , the porcelain is baked, there is a color or pattern on the surface and then a glaze is applied. Then there is the standard clay bodied tile where the clay is baked , a color on the surface and a glaze and its refired again. Homogenized tiles, and I m not over familiar with them is a very hard tile that has a very low water absorption rate. All are good products but clay tiles are not as true in sizing as most ( not all) porcelains . Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: self stick floor tile, vapor barrier
- Luan is not a vapor barrier. The best vapor barrier you can use is already down. Just apply it over the old floor. Make sure you don't have seam-over-seam.
- Q: What is the drill bit?
- We generally use a small sandblasting bit on the market can buy a good use
- Q: Can you suggest any methods to clean the floor and wall tiles?
- muriatic acid, but be careful it will eat the grout out if mixed to strong
- Q: China's top ten ceramic tile brand ranking?
- 1 De Gao DAVCO 2 · Marble MAPEI 3 Carpenter MARKEP 4 Ceylon CERESIT 5. Bose glue Bostik BASF BASF Australia can be high 8 · Yu Chuan 9. Shield DUNSHI 10 Rainbow YUHONG
