- Q: What‘s the average cost to install tile baseboards? I‘m replacing my wooden baseboards with tile and was just wondering what an average price to just do the baseboards with tile. I have roughly 1500 inches of floorboard that is going to be done and I am looking to use 20 X 20 inch tile. No bullnoseing or anything special, just cut the tile and install. Thanks
- UNLESS IT IS BATHROOM, LAUNDRY ROOM OR KITCHENS I JUST CANT PICTURE PUTTING CUT TILE IN. IT WILL LOOK TACKY WITHOUT A BULL NOSE OR A DECORATIVE STYLE. I RECOMMEND YOU JUST CHANGE OUT THE BASEBOARD TO A UPGRADED STYLE. WHAT DO YOU HAVE NOW? BASEBOARDS COME IN DIFFERENT STYLES AND SIZES FROM 2 1/2 INCH TO 6 INCH WITH DIFFERENT TOP CAPS. GO TO LOWES ETC AND CHECK THEM OUT BEFORE YOU DECIDE
- Q: is tiled floor the best flooring for people with pets?
- Maybe. It all depends on the nail size and the type of flooring. My father is a professional tile layer. And I know from his words that if your pets mess on the tile, the grout will get stained. Then, you will have to scrub them or re grout them. It really isn't good for the tile either when it gets scratched. It can turn into a crack then split! So, Linoleum May work. But, definitely not tile! Good luck! =]
- Q: My new home has a kitchen with glazed ceramic tiles covering most of the walls. The colour is basically honey brown, but there‘s a hideous purple border (in the same tile size shape) running horizontally vertically all over the place - I‘d say that 20% of the tiles are this colour.I want to reduce all the tiles to one (new) colour. Two guys (both pros) have this to say:GUY 1: Cheapest solution (and least noisy/disruptive) is to use a ‘glass enamel paint‘ over the tiles. I went online and found several manufacturers of this stuff.GUY 2: Scoffed at this and said there was no other way than retiling the whole kitchen.Guy 1 is adamant that it can be done, and the job will last if enough care is taken in preparing the surface. Is he right?Has anyone tried this ‘re-enamelling‘ technique, and were the results OK?Thanks!
- Okay. I'm a tile setter, so I am biased, but you will get best results by replacing all the tile. Guy#1 is right, but you need to realize it is just paint (even if its epoxy paint, which is much tougher than standard household latex paint.) It can (will) scratch and (will) scuff. The shine of the new expoxy surface will go away. If you are a meticulous house cleaner and never slide your pots and pans and dishes on the tile counter surface, then you can probably get away with it. So yes, it will work, but may not be a perfect solution, depending on your housekeeping style. Mike PS. I gotta chime in on Guy # 3's comments. He is right in that you can replace the offensive tiles. However, its not so simple, unless you are a good craftsperson. You have to be very, very careful removing the tiles, because you can very easily chip the tiles next to the ones you are removing.as he says, removing the grout is most important. Also, be very gentle with your hammering and chipping away at the old tiles. Its when you try to force it or try to remove too much at a time you run into trouble.
- Q: To any DIY‘ers out there! My kitchen has a white tile backsplash and these decorative fruit motifs here and there. (you remember that trend?)There are only eight of them strategically placed, but I‘d really prefer that there were none, and just the plain white like the rest of the tiles. I can‘t really aford to retile the whole backsplash right now, so my question is .. Is there an effective way to cover them or paint them?
- Absolutely! okorder / And here's a link for ceramic tile paint: If you find that painting is just too much work, you may want to consider going to Home Depot or Rona. They have these new funky stickers made to stick directly over ceramic tiles... and they last! Not as long as painting, but it will tide you over unitl you redo the backsplash in ceramic or whatever..... Have you considered the new metal tiles you can get now? If you want some info on metal tiles, just email me.
- Q: Buy tiles need to pay attention to what? What place where to sell tiles better?
- There are many varieties of tiles on the market today, there are only a dozen categories. Consumers face such as infiltration of whole body bricks, tiles, anti-skid tiles and the like, but do not understand the meaning of which. It is important to distinguish between good and bad tiles. Upstairs several have already introduced a lot of what I added: Floor tiles can be used to compare the following indicators of data: water absorption, wear resistance, acid resistance and pollution indicators to distinguish the quality of brick quality. Selection of glazed tiles, mainly to see their tires and glazed the treatment. Tire should be size specifications, the surrounding smooth, uniform thickness, the same specifications of the tile thickness and size difference should not exceed 2 mm. The quality of glazed is more critical. First, the enamel should be thick and smooth; secondly, the glaze color difference should be as small as possible. Bathroom bathroom suitable for small size tiles. Internationally renowned brands: "Bee", "Nobel", "Diamond", "Eagle", "Asia" Domestic well-known brands: "crown beads" "Samite" "Golden rudder" Indoor floor tiles are: Tiles, polished tiles, matt bricks, glazed tiles, tiles, anti-skid tiles, special anti-acid tiles (for the laboratory and other corrosive large ground) Outdoor floor tiles are: square brick, lawn brick
- Q: 2nd bathroom, rarely used. Not sure if I want to spend the time to remove the tile (200 sq ft) or just put a think underlayment over it and then laminate.Anything that I should be concerned with doing it this way?
- You don t say if its vinyl tile or ceramic tile. Vinyl tile the floor change is minimal and no problem. Doing it over a ceramic tile you may have a transition concern at the doorway. Other than raising the floor height, which I assume you realize, there is no concerns as long as the flooring down now is flat, solid and level, it ll be fine. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a few 100,000 s/f. GL
- Q: how can i tile over linolium flooring without pulling it up?
- Tap around the floor in a tight pattern. Loose spots will sound hollow. Cut them out completely with a sharp utility knife, angleing the knife away from the center of the spot you are cutting. Spred a floor prep, such as Ardex or Planipatch ( both portland cement based floor preps), over the floor to fill the holes and any pattern (you will need an 18 flat trowel). Spread the mix on the floor at a 45 degree angle. Scrape off the excess at a 60 to 70 degree angle. Work in a semicircle sweeping motion, leaving only what you need to fill the holes and pattern. The prep will get lighter as it dries, usually 20 - 45 miniutes depending on the size of the cutouts. All prep shrinks as it dries, so you may need to coat larger cutouts a second time. Scrape down any ridges with the edge of the trowell, use a low 5 to 10 degree angle to avoid gouging floor. Sweep floor thoroughly, at least twice, and vaccuum up pile. Then you are ready to set tile. Be sure to use the right notch size on the trowel for proper adhesion without squeez out mess. Also read the glue directions. Many glues need open time to tack up before setting tile. Doing this will make sure that you are getting the best adhesion possible. It will help to resist water damage, and it will keep the pattern of the vinyl from telescoping through the tile over long peroids of time.
- Q: Can I leave them alone and simply go over them w/ mud and ceramic tile . I really don‘t want to open the hazmat can of worms by getting the tiles tested. The tiles look like that mutfti pattern common in office buildings and schools and secured w/ a mastic. Thanks
- I believe the general rule in vinyl flooring or tiles is if it was manufactured before 1984 it probably has asbestos in it.....since it is old tile which probaby has some edges that are somewhat risen in spots,I recommend going over the floor with quarter inch plywood or luan, which should solve the problem.....
- Q: Kitchen is open to living area. Kitchen has tile already and living room has carpet. We want replace carpet wit hardwood if it look right, or should we just tile it all. Entry way from frony door is tile then living room begins with carpet then kitchen begins with tile.
- I have read several of the answers to your question and I would like to offer the following: Take a piece of the tile to the store with you and look at the contrast or compliment. Look at the thickness of the tile compared to the hardwood. try to get the closet thickness so you do not have a large drop between the floors.Any one can offer decorator ideas but in the end you must like what you see. When you find something you like, buy a box or carton to look at in the area you will use it in and assemble the flooring to get a good idea of how it will look. this way you will either love or hate it but you won't make a mistake.
- Q: A 15 foot by 18 foot porch floor is to be completely coverede with 1-foot square tiles. White tiles are to cover the center of the floor and green tiles are to form a 2-foot wide border around the white tiles. How many green tiles and how many white tiles will be needed?/. help plz. can you show work thanks very much.
- First find the area of the porch floor A = 15 * 18 = 270 ft? The green tiles form a 2-ft wide border on all four sides of the floor. This means that the length will be 2-ft shorter at each end, and the width will be 2-ft narrower at each side, of the white portion. The length and width will be L = 18 - 2(2) = 18 - 4 = 14 feet long W = 15 - 2(2) = 15 - 4 = 11 feet wide and its area will be Aw = 11 * 14 = 154 ft? [Where Aw = area of white tiles] The area of the green portion, Ag, will be the total area, A, less the area of the white tiles, Aw Ag = A - Aw = 270 - 154 = 116 ft? [Where Ag = area of green tiles] Since the area of each tile is 1 ft?, this means that there will be 116 green tiles and 154 white ones.
