Q: I am installing commercial tile and I have no idea what tool is used to cut this kind of tile, it easily breaks if its bent too hard. I need to cut curved areas on this tile and I have no idea what too to use. Please help! ;): If you are talking about vinyl tile you can use an hair drier to soften the tile so you can cut it without it crumbling. Use a curved tin snip or a utility knife to cut after softening. You should be able to lay it flat on the floor, soften it, scribe it with the utility knife, and then snap it. If you are talking about ceramic tile you should use a tile saw. You can rent one for about $60/day. You can buy one in Home Depot or Lowe's for about $90.

Q: I will be putting matching ceramic tile as molding....what is the best way to attach the ceramic molding to the wall?: Thin set will hold it to a sealed ( painted of primered wall) but it will slip and slide down the wall.If your not stacking it on other tile or it is a heavier type pc ( like a chair rail molding) Mastic , the pre mixed glue is a better way to adhere it with the proper amount of glue.Most all tiles will stay on with out support and dry to the point it will tear off dry wall when removed. Q: In a professionaly done job, what level of imperfection is acceptable. 12x12 porcellaine tile installed over backerboatd.at least a dozen tiles set either higher, lower, or tilted. Comapny says this is acceptable.: i have set hundreds of tile and have had 1000's set for me. i am a lic. gen contractor. NO! if its a matter of the tile tilted, thats bs. lower or higher, how much? 1/6th of an inch maybe. this is not acceptable in my line of work. 12 x 12 is very easy to lay. we just had installed 600 18 x 18 tile and u can lay a level across them anywhere and maybe a 1/16th will show under the level in places. i would tell the guy u r going to hire someone from the outside to come and look and that if they agree with u, ( thats its wrong ) that u r going to subtract that amount from the job. also give them the chance to fix the bad tile and if they will not then u will have someone do it and again subtract that from their billing. then instruct them that if they do not agree to that then they need to sue u for the amount of the job. inform them that u will counter sue for the cost of court-lawyer fees-and amount to have it done right. all of which is legal. lic. gen. contractor

Q: What does the thinset and grout do to tiles when installing them?: The thin set ( either a grey is what adheres the tile to the substrate your bonding to.It is also used as a filler when setting a cement board down to the floor. This ensures there is no voids between the sub floor and the cement board to make a solid base for tile. The grout is to fill the space between the tiles to help support the tile and to prevent dirt between the needed space for tiles. Q: I have glazed porcelain tile to put in my bathroom, but the thing is... that is is only 1/4 of am inch thick... Is it still okay to use it?...: glazed tiles are fine to use in the bathroom, the important thing to remember is if they are set properly and to set on either mortar base or hardiboard. the main concern though, would be whether the surface is too smooth a finish when used on the floor, especially when the tiles are wet! this could become a hazard to your health! a lot of tiles used in a floor application, have a sanded or rough finish ,just because of that !
