- Q: Ten months ago had expensive black tile installed in master bath. Now the tile appears dull and definitely not shiny, and we‘ve tried the usual cleaners, but can‘t get the shine back. Any suggestions on what we might try to return the lustre to this nice black tile?
- Go to home depot or lowes and buy Gel-Gloss. It's a polish for tile. It works great! I use it on my kitchen tiles and fiberglass tub surround. They have it on the aisle by the sinks and tubs.
- Q: We‘re putting in new porcelain tile floors in the kitchen and bathroom. Should the tile go under the refrigerator? Should tiles go in before or after the new vanities in the bathroom? Any other general tips for a first-time tiler?
- You should put the floor in the room before you put any of the appliances in and for in the bathroom put the tile in the whole room then put the vanities in after that way if you sell the house or want to change out the vanities you won't have to change thew tile
- Q: We want to put up kitchen tile for our back splash. I would like to put the squares on diagonally but my husband is concerned about the difficulty of all of the cuts. I need some DYI help. Please only serious replies, no jokesters
- Not totally sure what you are asking. I have applied square tiles in a diamond pattern. Be sure to get a wet tile saw to cut the tiles diagonally in half, as this will do a much neater job and make things easy for you. It really wasn't that difficult, lay out your pattern on the floor to get an idea how many cuts you need to make. Use those plastic spacers to ensure uniform spacings between tiles and then just have fun with it. It was a project that I enjoyed and it brought instant enhancements to the kitchen.
- Q: I‘m installing 13x13 floor tile on a slab. Any tips on how to do it right
- If your not overly familiar with doing tile a diagonal isn t the easiest to start on. Lay out and proper tools are a big help in your preplanning. Right size trowel and large enough wet saw and had cutter is a must. Get the longest straight site line and split the room in 1/2 with a chalk line. Lay tile back to the wall and figure the size of pc(pcs) you need. You can cut a few of these pcs as a starting point. Knowing you split the room you should be equal when you get to the other side. A perfect straight edge will help keep your lines straight. Use this on all sides as you build out from that wall and lay as though your doing a straight lay just that your on a 45 degree. Or if you are doing an open ended area , you can cut several tiles in 1/2 and work back. A bit trickier but overall look is better. Don t cut tiles directly in 1/2, you must cut just off center if this is a starting point. Very hard to do and takes experience. Any specific questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: My husband and I laid 4x4 square ceramic tiles on our counter tops. We have sealed them and everything....So the question I have is how do you get rid of the sandy resadue on the tiles from doing the grout work?
- The concern is that you've already sealed the tile job. You can still get the residue off, but if you sealed the residue onto the tile, it's going to be more difficult. Go to a building supply store (like Lowe's or Home Depot or Sears hardware) and get a cleaner for grout that contains phosphoric acid. It works really well on grout residue. It works better if you attach the problem within 10 days of the grout job. If that doesn't seam to work, try some wax remover on the tile to remove the sealer. Then use the phosphoric acid. Then, you'll have to reseal. Finally if none of that works, you may have to resort to muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) which is not fun to play with and can be dangerous. Follow the instruction and warnings carefully. Good luck
- Q: I am a big fan of tile in homes. I really love tile flooring and tiles in shower stalls, as it looks really nice and feels good on the feet lol. Is there any way to tell the difference between a porcelain and ceramic tile by looking at it after it is already installed? Friends of mine have tile in their kitchen on the floor, and I would like to be able to tell the difference by looking at it from an already installed view. This would also help for visiting other homes with tile, to better understand the difference in look and feel.
- Porcelain indicates the type of clay used to make the tile. Ceramic incorporates all clay tiles, including porcelain. There is no way to tell unless you look at the back of the tile. They often use glass tiles in bathrooms now, too. Ask an experienced installer for tile already in place or an experienced seller of tile if you want new tile.
- Q: HiIs there an adhesive that can be used to spot repair Vinylfloor tiles 18x18 on a basment floor?
- I definitely think that it is. A basement does not have to be as decked out as the rest of the house although it can be. There are really nice vinyls now a days that you can choose from so take your time and research well before you purchase. You will be glad that you didn't spend an arm and a leg and still got something nice. Hope this helps and God Bless!
- Q: If so, what do you clean it with? I have one in my kitchen I hate it! I‘m always cleaning it and we don‘t even wear shoes in the house but yet it always looks like it has blackheads! I have used the magic eraser to get the marks off but it‘s a p.i.t.a. :)
- Is this ceramic tile or place-and-press linoleum tiles? The latter have a shine layer that can wear off, then the rest of the tiles act like a sponge for any bit of dirt that comes along; there are products to re-seal it if that is the case. For our textured ceramic tile floor we use lemon ammonia and hot water solution. The ammona cuts just about any kind of soil, including grease, and rinses clean. There are sealers you can apply to the grout lines with a small paintbrush to keep the grout (which is porous) from becoming stained and soiled.
- Q: I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
- In regards to sealing grout, many grouts, like TEC Power Grout, never need to be sealed to maintain stain resistance. You can get TEC Power Grout at Lowe's. For the tile layout, start tiling at the end of the room and work your way out. At the end of the room, find the center point, and do a dry lay out of your tile from the center point to the wall. You want to have at least 1/2 a tile at the wall, although it looks better if you have a full tile along the wall. You also want to have a full tile at the entrance because it looks nice that way. You may need to adjust your dry layout and cut tile with a wet saw so that your tile can fit the space. Good luck!
