Q: For home gardening, it would seem that it is a matter of how pure one wants to be. However, including in a compost pile vegetable or fruit skins containing insect spray would definitely cause serious contamination.For commercial farms, does organic certification require that all compost or other so-called organic fertilizers and purchased soil, mulch, etc.,, be screened for chemical content?For home gardening, how can one be sure about the content of purchased soil, mulch, etc.?
No, it doesn't make your garden non-organic. Compost is an amazingly effective decomposition process. The bacteria and fungi that work to break down matter in compost can disassemble large molecules at the molecular level and are capable of reducing it to the elements involved or radically different and simpler compounds for most chemicals. Many pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are hydrocarbons and their origin is organic - that is they are made from the bodies of plants and animals that died eons ago. While it would not be a good idea to dump a load of pesticide or diesel onto your compost, the residues on veggies you eat will not cause a problem. A specialized composting process is used to clean up contaminated sites called bio-remediation. The EPA has done a number of studies using compost to clean up sites. they have even had great success with soil with TNT and other explosives in it. It is an effective way to clean up many of the areas of contamination we have to deal with. Commercial farms can use compost but I believe they are not allowed to bring in compost made from biosolids - sewage sludge. It isn't the human poop that is the problem in the biosolids, it is all the weird and not so wonderful things we flush down the toilet. Buying soil is not the best idea and I don't think the commercial organic growers can bring in soil without going through a recertification. Ideally you want to build the soil you have. There is one area that both home and commercial growers need to be wary of and that is bringing in material which may be contaminated with certain herbicides. Most herbicides breakdown but these three herbicides can cause serious long term problems - picloram, clopyralid and aminopyralid, I have a page on my website that gives more info on this issue.
Q: I tried to grow an organic garden last year but had no luck, all that happened was bugs eating my food.
Use flour instead of the product called SEVEN. It gums up the mouths of the bugs, they don't like it. Plant peppermint around your house and chicken coup. Rodents and Raccoons don;t like it. Shred orange peelings where you don't want your cats in the garden, the cats don't like the smell. Use cinnamon where the ants take residence. It won't kill them but it will make them want to move to another location. Sprinkle hot pepper powder where bugs are eating your plants. Wash egg shells. Let them dry out well as they break into pieces better when they are dry. Sprinkle it around your vegetable plants. They don't like crawling over the sharp edges to eat your plants. Ad compost to your garden soil. Compost is made from vegetable scraps like potato peelings, old pieces of lettuce etc... It breaks down and turns into soil. Manure is used but some contain pesticides that are causing leaves to curl funny and causing problems with growing vegetables. It depends on what the farmers use in the fields, or what the neighbors are doing with garden products, pesticides etc...may play a factor. The word organic is over used but I do understand what you mean. The government has such regulations on organic that they look at like a five mile radius and specific time frames before allowing farmers to sell there food as organic. If your neighbor is growing genetically modified seed in there garden, cross pollination with your veggies is a possibility. Organic by government standards means smaller vegetable production and less crop.

Q: recipe for tamales, better homes and gardens magazine, december 2004 issue, i think it was on the last page?
Ingredients 1 2 1/2 lb boneless pork 3/4 c Shortening 10 c Water 6 c MASA HARINA 1 md Onion; quartered 1 1/2 ts Baking powder 3 Cloves garlic minced About 50 dried corn husks; 4 c Red chili sauce Instructions In a 4 1/2 to 5 quart dutch oven bring pork, water, onion, garlic, and 1 1/2 t salt to boiling. Simmer, covered, about 2 1/4 hrs until meat is very tender. Remove meat from broth and cool Using two forks, shred meat, discarding fat. You should have 3 1/2 to 4 c shredded meat. Strain broth and reserve 5-6 cups. In a 3 quart saucepan, heat the red chili sauce and add shredded meat. Simmer, covered about 10 minutes. For MASA: beat shortening with a mixer on medium for 1 minute. Stir together MASA HARINA, baking powder and 2 t salt. Alternately add MASA HARINA mixture and broth to shortening, beating well after each addition. Add just enough broth to make a thick creamy paste. Soak corn husks in warm water for 5 minutes then rinse to remove and corn silk and debris. Drain. To assemble each tamale, spread 2 T MASA mixture in the center of a husk. Place 1 T meat sauce in the middle of the MASA. Fold in sides of husk then fold up bottom. Place a mound of extra husks in the center of a steamer basket in a dutch oven and put tamales in basket, open end up. Bring water to boiling. Reduce heat. Cover and steam 40 minutes, adding more water as necessary. Microwaving for a couple minutes works too. From: Better Homes and Gardens, December 1994
Q: I am beginning my own business and need a good company name. I am selling a vast variety of products such as candles like jar candles, home baked candles, table top tree tea light candles, lanterns with candles, etc., home decor such as wall candles and their fixtures, lawn and garden decor such as wind chimes, fountains, small statues, and swing sets, all different styles of jewelry, some bath and body items such as hand soaps and body lotions, and other small home and office decor. So I am looking for suggestions for a good company name so I can place them on business cards.
How about these names: Everyone's Treasure , Not Just Stuff or the name of the antique store on the TV show Ghost Whisper Same As it Never Was.
Q: can i buy water lettuce at home depot store or a garden store?
Not at Home Depot, go to a garden store or nursery.
Q: ots the last track on quot;A Brokedown Meoldyquot; I'm dying for these lyrics, I cant find them anywhere! Thanks so much!some of the words...quot;I gotta get home theres a garden to tend, theres fruit on the ground and the birds have moved back into my atticquot;
I gotta get home there's a garden to tend there's fruit on the ground and the birds have all moved back into my attic, whistling static when the young learn to fly I will patch all the holes up again. Well I can't believe that my lime tree is dead I thought it was sleepin, I guess it got fed up with not being fed and I would be too I keep food in my belly and hope that my time isn't soon. And so I try to understand what I can't hold in my hand and where ever we are home is there too. And if you could try to find it too cause this place is over grown its a waxin moon home is where ever we are if there's love there too. In the back of our house there's a trail that won't end we've been walking so far that it grew back in there's no trail at all, only grass growing taller get out my machete and battle with time once again but I'm bound to lose cause I'll be damned if time don't win. I gotta get home there's a garden to tend all the seeds from the fruit bare reed and begin their own family trees teach them thank you and please as they spread their own roots then watch the young fruit grow again And this old trail will lead me right back to where it begins. And so I try to understand what I can't hold in my hand And whatever I find I'll find my way back to you. And if you could try to find it too cause this place is over grown its a waxin moon home is where ever we are if there's love there too.
Q: I guess a statue of a cherub or something would work better, but I really like thai statues.
Well if its your home then yeah put what you like in it but if youre selling it or its going to be a public place then maybe you should consider what the majority of people will like better.
Q: Something catchy, please!
