- Q: I have a few small pits (about 1/16 in diameter, very shallow into the tile) that have developed in some old ceramic tile in my foyer (it may be from some salt that was tracked into the foyer over the winter). Is there a good way to repair it?
- I would try 'tile and grout sealer. These products are easy to apply and once dried are very hard. Go to your home supply store and look at a few different types and see what would work best for you application. Most people don't understand that tile needs to be sealed and re-sealed every year or two, especially in high traffic areas and where there will be a lot of dirt or water track across them.
- Q: hello! if i have a connected dining room/kitchen and the kitchen has ceramic tile (that is old) and the dining room has carpet, can i just rip up the carpet and install vinyl tile over the ceramic then over the sub-floor without any issues?
- Yes, Vinyl can be installed over the top of vinyl. If it is sheet vinyl inspect for loose areas and cut a seam and reglue it down. If it is square (or similiar) tiles inspect each piece and if loose re-glue. There is no problem with laying over top of the old floor. I have renovated numerous homes and for mediocre money you can make a old floor look nice.
- Q: I am tiling my kitchen countertop and want to put in some wood trim pieces around the front edge like is in newer homes with tile countertops. What I want to know is, where in Lowe‘s can I get that? Is it going to be with all of the moulding, etc., and am I looking for something inparticular? Thanks!
- I did this in my Kitchen and it looks great. We tiled it with granite 12x12 tiles and then topped the back splash with a decorative molding. It looks so good. For the front you can use pine its not too soft ours is pine and the kitchen is 6 years old now and it still looks great. We looked everywhere and couldn't find an edge thick enough so we made our own with a router. It was easy and then you can choose any wood you want if your wanting to stain it. One tip!! Make sure to leave about 1/4 inch gap between the tile and wood molding on the front and then fill it will silicone (you don't have to leave a gap at the top of the back-splash when you put molding on there to finish that edge off). It will take 3 or 4 times to fill it all the way and get it even perfectly with the top but its worth it. If you don't do this the tiles will expand and contract differently then the wood and the grout will crack and look like crap after a while. Trust me we first did it in the bathroom and that's what happened and we had to redo the whole thing. Every year or so you have to add some caulk or silicone but its not a big job its pretty easy and I do it once a year when I reseal the grout which is really important in the kitchen so you don't have staining. Its all done in an hour or so.
- Q: I poured bleach on the tiles in my bathroom and there was an emergency and had to leave home. When I got back the tiles were stained a yellowish color and it used to be smooth but now it‘s all rough like sandpaper. HELP!
- I don't know what type of tiles you have, but if it doesn't have a glazed finish, you may not be able to do much about it. Travertine is a popular natural limestone that is very popular these days and is frequently used in bathrooms. The only drawback is that it is a soft and porous material, so it is much easier to damage that a glazed tile or a natural polished marble. The good news is that it is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. Call a good tile man and get a quote to refinish and a quote to replace the damaged pieces.
- Q: I will be making a 36 x 36 hearthboard for my gas fireplace stove out of slate tile. Do I need to space them and use grout in between or can I just cement them down next to each other like you would glue down vinyl tiles?
- No don t even try. First all tile and especially stones need the grout. Grout improves the strength of set tiles. Stones and again especially slate is not perfectly uniform and having grout allows them to look aligned. Dirt and debris ( and especially ashes) will get in those thin joints and be dirty and a PIA to clean and keep clean. Being on a hearth, w/o grout would be a fire hazard but at least you have a gas insert where this wouldn t be a factor. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: i have ceramic tile on my countertop and i do not like it and i was wondering if i could put a countertop on top of the tile? i just want to know what my inexpensive route will be. i do not have a lot of money to have things done. just want to know what my options would be.
- Yes, you can tile over your existing tops. Consider, though, that if your landlord doesn't like it, he can charge you your security deposit for removal. Taking tile off of counters is an expensive, messy process, so you might want to get the OK first. Good luck w/your project.
- Q: and didn‘t seal the floor or grout. Now they are dirty, how can I clean them so they look new, then seal it? I have grout sealer, do I need to seal the tiles also, they look to be sort of porous?
- At Home Depot, there is a grout cleaner, you apply and wipe off. We used stain resistant frout for this reason when we did our bathroom but the cleaner does work well. When you seal it, make sure to apply lots of sealant and it wipes off the tiles themselves. You do not need to seal the tile, they should be fine.
- Q: Things fade on the tiles how to get rid of
- Tiles are often greasy, rust, rust and other stains, especially the tiles at the junction more easily filth. In order to keep the porcelain surface clean and not damage the porcelain surface bright, you can use multi-functional cleaning paste for cleaning. Tile cracks, you should first use a toothbrush dipped in a little detergent to remove dirt, and then at the gap with a brush brush can be a waterproof agent, so that not only can prevent water and can mold growth. Daily cleaning and maintenance of tiles, the first tile on all the stains thoroughly cleaned, if the glue or sticky, the neutral detergent can be used with 3M scouring rub. Place the floor cleaning agent (please use it according to the instructions) and sprinkle it on the floor tiles, rubbing the stains on the tiles with a waxing machine. And then water-based wax into a dry dry mop, the wax evenly coated on the floor can be.
- Q: Okay, I‘m doing a tub surround with porcelain tile. Got the last cut around the fixtures that requires a hole to be cut in the center of the tile. Long story short, I‘ve busted 22 tiles trying. I‘ve tried every single drill bit I‘ve got. Everything from metal hole punchers to concrete bits. Nothing even scratches this porcelain tile. Any tips on how to punch a hole in this tile? I‘m desperate!
- If you'd tried Big T advise and it didn't work then there's another way. Cut the tile in two pieces and notch out the pipe hole with a blade for cutting tile (a hand blade) it's easier then tossing out 22 bad pieces.
