The lumps are called hypertrophic scars, and supposedly they are pretty common and are caused by overcleaning, harsh products, or (as I think was my case) general irritation from the jewelry moving repeatedly back and forth through the piercing or being bumped around or rubbed/touched. Mine lasted quite a long time. Try leaving your piercing alone for a couple of days. Then salt water solutions or compresses are supposed to help the lumps to heal, and I also used tea tree oil and neosporine intermittently. Hot compresses like a heated washcloth applied to the area help to reduce the lumps, as well. Sometimes it's recommended to try another type of jewelry, like titanium, or switch temporarily to two separate bars. You might also try finding a really gentle cleanser/soap. I just kept my original piercing, using the above techniques off and on, and after months of the lumps remaining red and sore, they just went away totally. Just keep your eye out for any pussing (hypertrophic scars ooze, but they don't usually pus), increased swelling, and the area feeling very hot- these are signs of infectiona nd you should see your doc right away. Q:I got my scaffold piercing 6 days ago, with titanium, and it was fine until yesterday.I had a couple of nights out and might have knocked it a few times, but yesterday it was swollen, red, throbbing and very painful. There is no liquid coming from it. If it is infected, will I have to take it out or just take antibiotics?Thanks!: it sounds like it's just irritated, if it's infected it will be secreting puss. Have you tried to soak it in the rock salt solution? Soak two cotton balls and put one on each side on the piercing and keep it there for 10 minutes a day. And make sure the antiseptic spray has zero alcohol in it because that can irritate it and prolong healing. Try this for a few days and if it's not getting better then go see your doctor.

Q:so yeah as it says above^should i just wait till it no longer hurts, or do you have to wait a certain amount of time...: Industrial piercings take 9-12 months to heal completely and you never want to remove an unhealed piercing unless the jewelry is causing problems and at that point it should be done by a professional in a sterile environment. Taking the jewelry out before it is healed could cause it to close up, become infected or irritated, and can cause hypertrophic scarring (scar tissue) to form on your piercing. I took my industrial out after having it for 3 months. It was out for less than a minute and when I went to put it back in it went through the first hole easily but wouldn't go through the top hole no matter how hard I pushed. It immediately started bleeding and hurtling like crazy. Awesome. Waste of time, pain, and money. So, you might get lucky and just have it get a little irritated or prolong the healing time by changing it early. But you could also end up like me or worse, with any infected piercing. Why risk it?
