- Q:I am trying to find a vacuum cleaner that works but has a security feature that prevents it from being stolen. I work in a residence hall and have inherited the task of finding new vacuum cleaners.This hall has a history of thievery when it comes to vacuums, so I am hoping to find a means by which to control usage of a vacuum either with a key, a code, a combination, a timer, etc. Checking them out and in has proven not to work so well in the past.I want these vacuums to last for a long time, and I want them to be able to power through almost anything (hair, stickers, bobby-pins, etc.). - That is a tough one. I do not know of a vacuum that has a lock built into it. The Miele canister vacuum cleaners have a handle. You can put a bicycle style lock through the handle. You could also do that with a Dyson. The Miele's last really well.

- Amp is a unit of current. The rate of electrical flow. Volt is a unit of potential difference or voltage. This is usually constant for all electrical appliances in a country. In vaccum cleaners, the usual rating for how powerful the appliance is it POWER. The unit for this is Watts (W). 1800W is quite powerful. 1000W is quite weak. If they only give Voltage (Volts) and current (Amps), simply multiply the two to get the power. Power = Volts x Current.
- Q:I thought Dyson had a patent on bagless vacuum cleaners but now everybody is copying him. Is it because the patent has now expired and so people can copy it? (as he once sued hoover for copying him but that was a long time ago, around 10 years ago)Thankyou for your help

- I would think not. Look at the specs for vacuums you might be interested in and compare the amps or watts or whatever electrical spec is in vogue this year for vacuum cleaners.

- What about Kirby Vacuum Cleaners? I know they're are noisy, and grossly over priced. You can talk the salesman down to around $600.00. Check first to see if the salesperson is driving a cadillac Escalade. Also, the sales people prey on old people, and will not leave the home until the unit is sold.

- Q:If One doesn't care about phase-frequency or voltage and need a high speed generator can current be fed to the rotor so that these motors can be used as a generator?One more question:What voltage is needed for the rotor? Say for example the120 volts single phase motor's normal running speed is 10,000, what voltage needs to be fed to the rotor so that if one is turning the motor at this speed it would generate around 120 Volts. I know there is a lot of problem with this set up but since its being converted to DC and used in a hydrogen production system, Voltage or frequency isn't a big issue.
- Plug-in drills and vacuum cleaners have usually been universal motors, essentially the same thing as series connected DC motors. I don't believe they can be used as generators without changing the internal connections. The Dyson vacuums apparently use permanent magnet motors as do battery powered drills. Those motors would probably make good generators, but you would need to eliminate the electronic control and connect directly to the motor coils. Any motor that can be used as a generator would generate the rated voltage at the rated speed for which it was designed as a motor.
