- I think I see what you're asking When you write the formula of an ionic compound subscripts are used to represent the ratio of positive and negative ions in the ionic compoundThat's done by finding the charge of the element and flipping them around(like you are thinking) But when your dealing with molecular compounds like: 2 H2+O2- 2 H2O you have to balance them differently as you can see The last part I put may seem confusing but that's because water is a covalent compound and not ionic.
