Weathering resistance:

- Q: Hi!When we use floor(a) in MatLab, it's returned the biggest integer smaller than a.But when we type "floor a" or any other letter without parenthesys, another crazy integer is returned. Try "floor z", "floor r", etc., and you'll see.What does this integer mean?
- My guess is these letters have been assigned values as variables. Thy typing just z and see. (I'll admit I've never used MatLab so this is just a guess.)
- Q: How do I show this if I do not know anything about floor(x)?
- floor(x) is x rounded down to the next integer. So floor(8.3) = 8, floor(-4.6) = -5, floor(11) = 11. Let x = d + r, where d is an integer and r is a decimal with 0 <= r < 1. floor(5*x) = floor(5d + 5r) = 5d + floor(5r) <= 5d + 4 = 4 + 5*floor(d) <= 4 + 5*floor(x). EDIT I had a typo above when defining d and r, it is now correct.
- Q: I've looked at other answers and I think I need this explained in blonde language. Is there supposed to be an actual floor underneath a bathtub? Me and my fiancée have a place but the floor underneath the tub is nonexistant. Its basically a hole there. We live on the 2nd floor Tips and help would be great!
- In old houses with bathtubs up on legs (claw foot) the tub was installed after the entire room was floored, ie the floor boards continued under the tub. And very old houses were built before there was indoor plumbing - bathrooms added in a closet or partitioned section of a bedroom with existing floors. But it's normal for built in bathtubs to be placed directly on beams (joists) when a house is built, then the floor added afterwords. I suppose that's cheaper - - - and easier to access plumbing from beneath if major repairs are ever needed. We were surprised when remodeling a 1910 house: big bathrooms with great mosaic tile floors and built-in style bathtubs that were way ahead of their time . . . . . we went to move one and found that the tubs mounted directly on beams - no floor beneath - so to save the floors the tub had to stay in the original location.

- My girlfriend and I do ballroom dancing. The best floorings we have danced on are clean and recently waxed wood flooring and marble. Most dance studios I visited before signing up for lessons for us had parquet wood floors for their dance floors. Likewise for most halls that were rented for weddings we've attended. The marble floor of one hall was really nice to dance on as well, but the cost may be prohibitive since marble isn't cheap. The thing about clean and waxed wood floors is that it allows the women's feet to pivot for turns-- it is neither too slippery nor too sticky. Parquet floors, in my humble opinion, are not pretty. However they are only slightly more expensive than a good linoleum floor where I am at and you can make the dance floor any size you like easily since they are a floating floor. I have never had the opportunity to dance on linoleum, but if I think back I remember them being more sticky than I would prefer. If the floor is too sticky then it can put too much torsion on the girls ankle which is the case when you have a dirty unwaxed wood floor as well. I think the linoleum in all the kitchens I've ever been in were to 'soft' and gave too much traction. We did dance on the cheap, hard vinyl composition you see in schools, hospitals, and department stores once. It was okay-- good even. I can see that commercial stuff being usable-- and it is ultracheap.
- Q: I have wood floors in my apartment and am putting a few coats of polyurethane on them, to protect them and make them shiny. Question- does the (water based Home Depot polyurethane) fill the little cracks between the wood slices so that the floor is essentially one smooth surface?Thanks!

- Installing laminate is pretty easy in most cases. Remove all base boards. Make sure the floor is clean. Role out your sound bearrier. Tape the seams using a wide masking tape. You'll need a laminate wood block to connect you laminate together. Your peices that end up next to the wall will have to be a little short to fit in place. In door ways lay a scrap piece upside down and take a saw and cut out door jams to your laminate fits under door jams. Hope this helps some. I've installed for years.
