- Depends if you have carpet or hardwood floors. Any vacuum would work as long as you have the 5 or so attachments it comes with. I have 2 cats and a dog, with hardwood floors. I use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the couches and beds, and it works just fine. Just make sure it has an upholstery attachment.

- Q:Do I need to Vacuum up pet hair, etc before I use one of these Bissell Upright Steam Cleaners. I was going to purchase a new Bagless Bissell Pet Hair removal vacuum and the aile over I saw the Bissell Pro Heat cleaners for like 100 bucks more. Can I just get rid of my vacuum and use this steam cleaner instead or do you still need to vacuum before you clean. Or can I use steam cleaners without the water now and then just like a vacuum?
- You have to have both. Steam cleaners aren't designed to be vacuum cleaners. (I haven't heard of a dual purpose one yet.) You need a vacuum cleaner for weekly general cleaning in between steaming and you use the steam cleaner for cleaning every couple months or if have a particularly tough stain in carpet or a large house party to clean up after. Or just buy the vacuum cleaner and rent a steamer when you need it. Or hire Stanley Steamer to steam clean for you. The only people who really need to own a steamer and use it frequently are those with white/light carpets and lots of foot traffic and pets.

- Yep, buy a good one like your parents did. Look at it this way: you can buy a cheap one now, which won't work all that well, and will break down in a year or two, then buy another cheap one, and so on, or you can spend a little more and get one you could have for many years which will do what you need. Buying a cheap one is cheaper now but not over the next 10-20 years or more. Go to a store that sells and services vacuum cleaners and buy a used vacuum in a really good brand. They'll know which ones last and which don't--remember, they fix the ones that don't. I've got a Filter Queen I bought used in 1987 for $500, still works as well as the day I bought it. At the time, I was doing housecleaning and went through two $60 vacuums in one year.

- Q:I'm a guy who isn't extremely familiar with vacuum cleaners so maybe someone can help. I was running around the house with my Kenmore Progressive vacuum cleaner and I accidentally pushed the adjustable thingy that lets you set the height of the vacuum. This adjuster thing is about halfway down the silver tube. The second I touched it, the carpet cleaning part shut off so it's just sucking air. I pushed everything together as hard as I could trying to get it to come back on but with no luck. I had been vacuuming for quite a while. Do these things shut off when they get too hot and stay off until they cool? It seems kind of fishy that it died right when i touched the adjuster thing though. Any ideas?
- I interpret your description to mean that the motor that drives the beater brush stopped running. If that motor is really an electric motor (and not one of those turbine brush drives), and the problem of it shutting off when you hit the height adjustment is related, then it would seem reasonable to look for a broken wire. One other possibility is that maybe the brush dug into the carpet (did you adjust it downward?) and stalled the motor and that might have caused it to burn out (usually a fusible link in the motor windings), or with luck, it's just a breaker that you can reset. If it was a thermal protection device that tripped, it would had to have been quite a coincidence, because if it tripped from an over-temperature condition, it would not likey happen so instantantly after you hit the adjustment control.
