- Q: I have a USB keyboard and mouse (combo thingy). I can not use the USB keyboard and mouse when trying to enter setup, boot menu, or anything like that becasue Windows needs to load the driver for it, which it can't do at that point. My motherboard does not support the old PS2 keyboard, so I'm pretty sure I can't use my old keyboard. What do I do? All I really need to do is enter Linux instead of Windows for a little bit (I am dual booting)
- Unplug the usb keyboard from the computer, power the computer down completely and remove the power cord/switch the power switch on the power supply wait 30 seconds plug in power, usb, and try rebooting The usb keyboard should work now, if not, you'll need a different keyboard. USB ports sometimes stay active even when the computer is shut down, so you have to do a cold boot to get them to reactivate themselves on bootup to detect a keyboard. You could try another usb port too.

- PS/2 connection keyboards will work with any PC form the last 20+ years ( PS/2 are purple circular). If it doesn't work then check the pin's are straight. USB keyboards should work with most form the pas 5 years, though some PC's may not let you use them in the BIOS. If you have special keyboards, like Z-board or other gaming/multimedia keyboards then you may need to get a driver, just google the brand and model of your keyboard. If it's not a USB model in an pre-XP PC, or a gaming/multimedia keyboard then your keyboard is probably broken, buy a new one, there pretty cheap. Edit: Have you tried putting other stuff in the same USB port? or used the keyboard on other computers? the USB port your using may be fried, or your keyboards may be fried.

- sounds like the keyboard driver is corrupted, if you use the mouse, go to control panel, system devices, select the keyboard hit delete restart your computer, it should detect that the keyboard isnt installed and reinstall the drivers. other than that the actual keyboard connector might be damaged

- Your BIOS is telling you the keyboard is not connected or is bad. Unplug the keyboard. If it is a PS2 keyboard check for bent pins and plug it back in. If it is a USB keyboard unplug and put it in another USB port. Usually USB ports are in pairs on the rear of the motherboard. If you have 4 ports then plug the connector into the other set or a front USB port. Reboot. If problem persists take the keyboard to another computer and test it. If it is a USB keyboard you can simply plug it in any open port. There is no need to reboot or unplug the other keyboard. If it is a PS2 keyboard you will have to shutdown and swap keyboards to test it.
