If the ropes are NOT at the very ends then by passing the rope on the end which has the 4 kg can of paint the whole plank may rotate about the pivot created by the rope. This will depend on where the two ropes are on the plank.

Go to a rental yard and rent a baker. It's 6' tall, and has holes in the frame every 6 or so. This allows you to build it on stairs. It's a safe alternative to building your own. Hope this helps.
