Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

The earliest citation given in the Oxford English Dictionary for any word used as a name for this element is alumium, which British chemist and inventor Humphry Davy employed in 1808 for the metal he was trying to isolate electrolytically from the mineral alumina. The citation is from the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London: "Had I been so fortunate as to have obtained more certain evidences on this subject, and to have procured the metallic substances I was in search of, I should have proposed for them the names of silicium, alumium, zirconium, and glucium."

Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."[69] But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."

The -ium suffix conformed to the precedent set in other newly discovered elements of the time: potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium (all of which Davy isolated himself). Nevertheless, -um spellings for elements were not unknown at the time, as for example platinum, known to Europeans since the 16th century, molybdenum, discovered in 1778, and tantalum, discovered in 1802. The -um suffix is consistent with the universal spelling alumina for the oxide (as opposed to aluminia), as lanthana is the oxide of lanthanum, and magnesia, ceria, and thoria are the oxides of magnesium, cerium, and thorium respectively.

The aluminum spelling is used in the Webster's Dictionary of 1828. In his advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal in 1892, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents[58] he filed between 1886 and 1903. It has consequently been suggested[by whom?] that the spelling reflects an easier-to-pronounce word with one fewer syllable, or that the spelling on the flyer was a mistake.[citation needed] Hall's domination of production of the metal ensured that aluminum became the standard English spelling in North America.

Q: Can aluminum sheet be painted?
Yes, aluminum sheet can be painted. However, it is important to properly prepare the surface by cleaning, sanding, and priming it before applying any paint. This will ensure better adhesion and durability of the paint on the aluminum sheet.
Q: In making a recipe, such as a chocolate bark, which is better/easier to peel off the bark? I've noticed that sometimes foil likes to stick to chocolate and would hate to have to scrape, peel off tiny bits of foil off my barkOR would foil+a cooking spray such as Pam work better than the parchment or wax paper? Also, the bark will have other ingredients in it, such as dried fruit/nuts - if that makes a differenceThanks in advance!

Q: Make a heat telescope by putting the bulb of a thermometer in a paper coffee cup lined with aluminum foilOn a cool dry, clear night point the telescope at the sky and after a few minutes read the thermometerThen point it at the earth for a few minutes and read the thermometer againYour results indicate:a) the sky is hotter than the earth.b) the earth is hotter than the sky.c) both the sky and the earth have the same temperature.
a single fiber versus many fibers, twisted or not, will always be just that: a single fibre There is nothing magic about having more of the same thing being stronger than a single one.
Q: Do you need root stimulant for air layering? I just did my first air layer on a japanese maple tree I have in my backyardI just took a twist tie, plastic back (the kind that you ged Carmel corn in) but the corn was in a paper bag, potting soil, and para film tapeI cut two slits around the bark of the branch and removed the barkI then slipped the bag over it and tieing it off with a twist tie and put just regular potting soil in the bagI then tied the other end of the bag with the para film tape and put aluminum foil over the bagI didn't use any rooting hormoneDo I need rooting hormone for it to work? How long will it take before I see little rootlets?
every culture is different But i think everyone wants to get married for the sake of not being alone I think we want to have kids because it is biologically engraved in us to reproduce I dont think it is an unhappy life, definitely stressful but they say as you lay on your death bed the last thoughts in your mind are the relationships you have made with people, especially family
Q: Does the tin foil paper or aluminum foil paper can protect people from radiation?
I want to tell you that the radiation can not be isolated. it only can be reduced.the radiation you said is computer radiation. can you really buy a thick concret wall in front of you? it may have an impact on your phone signal and net speed.you can use a method of refracting-type at 45 degree to reduce radiation(like a fighter to avoid rader radiation.)more
Q: What is the defof a metal & can aluminium conduct electricity? If not, why is it classified as a metal?
Brisk walking is great for burning body and tummy fatsExercising is often not enough to lose weightI am on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high proteinI have lost 31lbs/14kg and have been maintaining my 108lbs/49kg for more than a yearAll the details in my blog.
Q: Is it possible to install carpeting with a curving shape to it and tuck and tack it up against ceramic tile? Without using a transition strip? Thx
Yes you canYou would need sections of wooden tack strips following the curve to hook the carpet toThe gap between the carpeting and tile would be covered by a metal transition stripThese strips are usually aluminum, which can be bent in a large radius and knocked into place along the curved transition.
Q: Im after a way to cook pork spare ribs so that they are nice and juicy instead of dry and flavourlessI bought them from the butcher and they're already marinated so all i gotta do is cook emEither on the bbq or in the oven ill be happy to do i just wanna know the timing, temp and if i need to wrap them up to keep the sauce
I do mine in the oven then the grill (weather permitting, of course), but sometimes I just don't want to deal with the charcoal and the back and forth to the BBQ (I keep it away from the house so we don't get smoked out) Remove them from the marinade, pat them dry with paper towels and then cut them into manageable pieces (about 4 rib sections) and place them in an ovenproof baking dish (think: a 9X13 clear Pyrex dish, borrow one from a neighbor if you don't have one) add your BBQ sauce of your choice and cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in a 250-275F degree oven for 5-6 hours (AND RESIST THE TEMPTATION, THEY'LL BE JUST FINE) If you open the foil, you won't get as good a seal, and you want them to steam-bake.if you like them with a bit of a crust, after you're done with the baking of them, run them under the broiler (with your wrist tied to the oven door so you CAN'T walk away) and watch them carefully till they're as crispy as you like.Enjoy!!! Q: This question asks for the most effective method to clean aluminum foil after it has been used for cooking or other purposes.

The best way to clean aluminum foil after use is to gently wipe it with a damp cloth or sponge to remove any food particles or residue. If there is stubborn residue, you can use a mixture of warm water and dish soap, then rinse thoroughly with water. Avoid using abrasive materials like steel wool, as they can scratch the foil. For a deep clean, you can wash it in a dishwasher or soak it in a solution of vinegar and water. Dry the foil completely before storing to prevent any potential for bacterial growth.

Q: Is it possible to use aluminum strips for the exterior walls of a building?

Yes, aluminum strips can be used for exterior walls. They are lightweight, durable, and resistant to corrosion, making them suitable for cladding and facades. Aluminum strips can also be coated with various finishes to enhance their appearance and protect against weathering. They are commonly used in modern architecture for both aesthetic and functional purposes, offering a sleek and contemporary look while providing insulation and weather protection.
