Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.
Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.
Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.
Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.
Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.
Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

- I'd say it would compress down to 4 and provide about the same R value as a 4 battIt's not going to solidify, and it's not going to spring backThe actual insulation is provided by air trapped in the batt, not by the glassIf you squashed a 12 batt down to 4, it would probably be worse than using a 4 batt as the glass actually conducts heat and would be compressed so the fibres would conduct more heat.

- Q: I have a survival knife that came coated, but I'd rather have it be bare and polished metal, so that the blade could be used as a reflective signaling deviceAs far as how to achieve that, I know it would be fairly simple using a dremel tool- sanding off the coating then using the polishing brush and polish paste to bring the metal to a shine, but I want to make sure thats not going to affect my knife in any other way I can't imagine loss of the coating would weaken the metal at all, and yea I guess it would show dirt and such easier but that doesn't hugely concern me.And I know the coating isn't too thick and will come off easily b/c its already starting to wear off on parts on the blade that tend to rub going in and out of the sheath
- No, I wouldn'tIf you polish off coating from a knife blade it will probably rust more easily.carry a small mirror or aluminum foil for a reflective signaling device.
- Q: My bf and I do not eat beans at all, and I know that is always a cheap option but we hate themI'm sick of spaghettiI'm a really great chef but im on such a tight budget and I'm running out of ideas for delicious healthy dinnersWe do salads, ground turkey dishes and pasta all the timeSo maybe something I haven't thought of please :)
- Definitely will be a snarky answer, but foil on windows looks dumbWhy even bother having a window if you can't see though it? There are several 'light/heat' blocking curtains and shades you can find at any store that has housewares, and though it will be more expensive than foil, will look nice and keep your room coolAnd perhaps I'm wrong, but it will be the rare window that will focus enough heat to set the foil or curtain on fire.
- Q: how long do i cook a turkey that weighs 23 lbs and at what temp do i put it on ?
- I put mine on 250 and let it cook for hoursI cover it with foil after I season it so that it keeps it's moistureSorry I tried to return your email but it wouldn't send.I put it on 250 and cook it for about 6 or 7 hoursI season it then put a small amount of water, maybe a cup, in the bottom of the panThen I cover it with aluminum foil and put it in the oven and let it cookIt is very moist when you take the foil off it Good luck and sorry about the email issue!

- Q: When 60.0 g of aluminum react with hydrochloric acid, how many grams of hydrochloride acid react?
- I see no reason why it would have to be evenly distributedSince each muscle group does a different thing, it would make sense that they are more focused than evenly distributedCheers, Easymac79
