- Q: I was pricing vacuum cleaners and some say they have 12 volt motors and some 6 amps. Which is the better buy?
- Volts and amps are different things. Power is the product of volts times amps. The motor in the vacuum can be rated in watts or in horse power. 12 volts times 6 amps is 72 watts. This is about 0.1 horsepower (746 watts in one horsepower). Some vacuum cleaners rate their machines suction power in air-watts. A bigger or more powerful motor doesn't always mean better suction. The design could be poor or inefficient so you really need to know how well the machine acutally picks up dust and dirt. The air-watt rating should be a better indicator than just watts or motor size. If you want a good vacuum cleaner, check out Consumer Reports.
- Q: My wife and I are stumped trying to find an answer. I have these crazy bouts of itching that is seemingly not stopping. I went to the allergist and had some allergy test ran. He said that I am allergic to dust mites, grass/weed, and cat hair. We have been cleaning our house top to bottom with a Hepa filter vacuum (Dyson) and installed bed covers and pillow covers that are dust mite proof. We have wiped down the walls, the roof, and pretty much everything but the itching continues. I don't go outside much and work from home. Does anyone know of what might cause this? We have ruled out lice or bed bugs. I don't know if it helps much but I've had gastric bypass surgery. Please help...we are driving ourselves nuts with the constant cleaning and vacuuming. I've tried Cortozone 10 and allergy meds but they only seem to put a small dent in the itching.

- I suggest that you look at a copy of Consumer Reports magazine. In their March issue they rated vacuum cleaners. They recommend Bagged uprights as being easier to handle and easier to empty. One of their first choices was Hoover Widepath Tempo for $80. (It is sold at KMart) I bought this model and I like it as it does a good job cleaning and is just as effecient as many of the higher priced models. The Shark Navigator was #18 among bagless . The only Dyson bagless model to score reasonably well was the DC28 Animal at $600(rated#4) the next Dyson was DC14 rated #17 at $400. Consumer Reports magazine is at libraries or you can subscribe online.
