Q: We must have had 10 vacuums in the past 5 years. We have been buying bagless upright vacuum cleaners in the $80-$150 range. We run a playgroup from our house so we vacuum alot!! At least 3 times a day. These cheap cleaners just don't last. The loose suction very quickly and eventually just break. So we have decided to invest in a better quality one. Any suggestions of a good quality vacuum cleaner that will last and do a really good job time after time. We don't really care about bag/bagless or upright/canister. We just want something that works well and will last. We are looking in the $400 max price range. So far we have been looking at Dyson, Oreck and Electrolux. Please help!!!!: Dyson - the best vacuum cleaner! If you're going to pay that much, make it worth it. Plus I'd suggest you take a look at the 'steam mop' (which can be used on carpet stains). I've NEVER ever taken to infomercials, but it looks really cool! I think it would be great for your playgroup because the kids won't be rolling around in chemicals. Anyway, make sure to check the warranties on all the vacuum cleaners and possibly ask for a trial in-store if they allow you.

Q: (Can the deep cleaner be used without the water as a regular vacuum?) Any thoughts on the following vacuums? Q: I have acctually been asking this question for a number of years and have to admit that I am more interested in peoples reaction to the question than in a prosaic answer. However I wouldn't be oppossed to a definative answer from someone who builds the things. Just because I find it a silly place for a headlight doesn't mean theres not a valid reason for it being there.: I like to vacuum in complete darkness and find the headlight a necessity. I'm obviously kidding and the only thing I can think of is when you vacuum under chairs or beds it shows anything you may not want to vacuum up.

Q: Have you ever run over your OWN toe with the front of the vacuum cleaner?: Strangely no, but I have vacuumed up/over everything else...even pets.

Q: Do I need to Vacuum up pet hair, etc before I use one of these Bissell Upright Steam Cleaners. I was going to purchase a new Bagless Bissell Pet Hair removal vacuum and the aile over I saw the Bissell Pro Heat cleaners for like 100 bucks more. Can I just get rid of my vacuum and use this steam cleaner instead or do you still need to vacuum before you clean. Or can I use steam cleaners without the water now and then just like a vacuum?: You have to have both. Steam cleaners aren't designed to be vacuum cleaners. (I haven't heard of a dual purpose one yet.) You need a vacuum cleaner for weekly general cleaning in between steaming and you use the steam cleaner for cleaning every couple months or if have a particularly tough stain in carpet or a large house party to clean up after. Or just buy the vacuum cleaner and rent a steamer when you need it. Or hire Stanley Steamer to steam clean for you. The only people who really need to own a steamer and use it frequently are those with white/light carpets and lots of foot traffic and pets.

Q: Got the Dyson but do not like it.: I used to sell Kirby Vacuum cleaners when I was young. They are very expensive however in all of my demonstrations I could never beat the cheap old Shop Vac. While the Shop Vac does not come with fancy attachments it is the most sensible design. The vacuums with the paper bags designs are sheer stupidity. They blow bacteria all through the air. Absolute nonsense. The little water tanks sound like a good idea but I find the machines awkward and clumsy and frustrating. Give me that sensible Shop Vac any day and get your fancy gadgets out of my face.

But you do not have a vacuum inside your machine. You have only a partial vacuum. It takes sophisticated lab machinery to make a perfect vacuum (or you can travel to outer space). However vacuum or not, most of the sound from a vacuum cleaner comes from the motor, through the external housing.

Q: Skimmers are machines like vacuum cleaners that pull up the oil from the surface of the water. The water must be calm in order for skimmers to be effective.: Your own original version is better than any of the commenters' suggestions. Nothing wrong with the original at all.
