- Wing Chun was developed from the five Shaolin animal styles, tiger, snake, crane, panther and monkey. The popular (incorrect) belief is that the style contains more of the crane and snake styles than of the other animal styles, hence why it is sometimes referred to as a crane and snake style. The crane, in the Shaolin system, is evasive, protective and gentle, using flowing techniques that redirect the attacker's energy, rather than fighting strength with strength. The snake is a very fast, straightforward style, protecting the centreline and attacking along straight lines with quick thrusting finger attacks. - OK, first, what kind of crane? there are many different kinds that do many different things. From loading containers at the seaport to high rise buildings. One does not just go into cranes. The more experienced ones, started out as oilers or greasers. Some started out as signal persons. They learned by watching and listening. In the following states you must hold National certification: CA, HA,MT,OR,WA,MN,WV,NM,RI,NJ,NV,NY UT. PA and SC have restrictions now but will be added sometime soon. You can attend a crane school that prepares you for the national certification, but it expensive and not easy for someone without a background working around cranes. There is a lot of terminology and mathematics involved. Not to mention the Federal, state, local and OSHA rules you must practice. Go to your state employment office. They have all the information you need. get to know one of the counselors and pursue your dream. It is not as easy as it seems. But is it a well paying career. Good luck Bill

- Good question. Apart from the aspect of training, if you use it as a stance like in The Karate Kid in a real street fight or in a pub, it is comically useless. Movies are only movies and the moves are choreographed to captivate the audience's romanticism with Kungfu. But, having said this, the crane stance if used as a transitional move is a practical technique but both outstretched hands are either spear-hands or tiger-claws, not crane-beaks rising from the sides as in The Karate Kid. Or, if targeting only to the frontal opponent, both hands are forward, one fore and the other behind the front hand. The lifted leg is a frontal leg block either with the shin or knee. The knee must reach your solar plexus as a proper position. The whole centre-line is protected for an immediate instance, and is particularly used when there is a sneak attack from the front. But, don't ever use it as a stance waiting for an attack nor with any fanciful stances for that matter in real situations. To be effective with this technique, the person must be able to resist a frontal push while standing on one leg. To achieve this, he has to spend long hours on the 'horse-stance'. The common term for this single-legged stance is Golden Cockerel Standing On One leg, Jin Zi Du Li (my romanisation of Chinese is not to be trusted, but it sounds somewhat like that in Mandarin). As I said earlier, this is a transitional technique and really what follows after is the interesting part.
