Q: A few years ago, my college decided to take down two multilevel dormitories. The demolition company decided to take it down piecemeal with a wrecking ball. The wrecking ball was attached to the crane via a very large tire (just the rubber part, not the inflatable part). I have seen this done on normal cranes and other wrecking balls on TV and was wondering if any professional construction people out there know why they would do this as to me, a guy not in the construction/demolition business, think that might be a bit unsafe.: Shock absorption. The ball swings toward the building and hits, the energy of that swing is mostly dissipated into the building but also into the cable and cable connectors as the ball bounces back. That shock of the impact resonates and gets dissipated by the tire. It reduces wear and tear on the cable and cable connectors, also on the crane tower. Your car engine has motor mounts of the rubber type of material and it absorbs the resonating vibration of the engine. I have seen the cable connectors, interesting to say the least. The strands are interlaced sometime, and other times I see them clamped together. It would seem important to protect those joints. I do not know all of the crane business terminology, but that would be the gist of it.

Q: I understand the Crane stances and know there are more than one. I am referring to the single leg crane stance. I also know that stances are only used briefly. But I am curious, does this stance have any bunkai applications? Or is it only useful against dodging a kick or preparing to kick?: I okorder /

Q: I still cannot grasp how a crane was taken apart on a building with no roof: They used a climbing crane , and who said that the building has no roof? the crane parts can be dismantled on site and removed either by helicopters or using the construction lifts

Q: Hey,My grandma has a big country estate with a river and its her birthday coming up. She's indicated she might like another peacock (we've had them before), but I'm thinking of branching out into other birds. We tried Lady Amerhursts pheasants, but one of the dogs knocked over their cage before they were properly acclimatised and they disappeared.So, does anyone know if its possible to get storks or cranes or other big waterbirds to keep as domestics?They'd be free ranging on the estate and the river, so need to be smart about foxes and mink (ie roost in trees or go into a house). We've kept geese and ducks successfully on our river like this, so does anyone have any ideas?Or should we try again with pretty pheasants?: Depends on where you live ? Stick to Ornamental Pheasants or Ducks,Storks and Cranes,need to be penned in at night because you will have to pinion them to prevent them flying. Try some Golden Pheasants for a try ,Lady Amherst are becoming a rare commodity and are quite expensive,if you have Foxes and Mink,then no matter what you get you will have problems these two predators.

Q: It got me thinking.: I have not seen the movie, but I think I saw what you're talking about on a preview. I would think that the safeties involved in the control system for a crane would make it highly unlikely to happen. There is no absolute assurance, only probabilities or likelihoods. You just hope that you have enough failsafes in the system so if one part of the system fails, the others will take over, or shut the whole thing down properly.

Q: Could anyone tell me how they erect a construction crane.Some how they just are suddenly THERE, as If by magic.It seems as though the Boom part of the crane must be kind of JACKED up into place.That is the only way I can see them getting those GIANT concrete blocks into the back end of the boom. It doesn't seem possible otherwise. The only other thing I can thing of is the bulk of the pieces are brought in by helicoper and attached.Everything kind of makes sence except the Giant concrete blocks used as a counter weight. ALSO, if the blocks are needed to act as counterweigth to the CRANE itself..why doesn't the Crane fall over when it picks stuff up???: How do they erect the construction cranes? Not very well according to the news of them toppling down of late. Seriously, the cranes are lifted upward one or two floors at a time as the building progresses upward - this is usually accomplished by pulling them up into place with heavy cables and powered winches.
