Q: I'm researchign for this demonstration speech on origami and uncovered a legen that says in the Japenese custom if you fold 1000paper cranes you are granted a wish. Just wondering, has anyoen ever tried this? and the outcome?I'm goign to do it this weekend!
There are many stories of this, who is to say if they are true or not. A young girl dying of cancer folded 1000 paper cranes and she miraculously recovered. I don't think it is like a I really hope Jimmy takes me to the prom!! type wishing though. It is a nice thought nonetheless. . . .

The easy answer is that the applied torque is the cross product of the radial arm and the force, or in this case T = 811*17*cos(13.5). The hard (it's actually not that hard) answer will depend on the design and material properties of the crane. Since the problem asks for max torque, I'd find the bending stress due to the moment found above (T = 811*17*cos(13.5)) where bending stress = Ty/I. Next, compare this to the yield stress of the crane's material and an appropriate failure criterion.

I googled crane jumper and came up with nothing. Not to say there isn't such a creature, that could be a regional name for it, it might be called something else.

Not sure what you are asking exactly... Are you saying that you have a crane with a capacity of 100 tons and you want to know the pressure on the soil where the crane is positioned? In this case, you take the capacity (in pounds) plus the weight of the crane (in pounds) then divide their sum by the area of the tracks on the crane (in square feet). This will result in pounds per square foot or psf as you wrote above. These are example estimates, they may not be anywhere near the correct answer, this is simply how to do the calculation. Assumed Capacity 100 ton = 200,000 lbs. Assumed Weight 105 ton = 210,000 lbs. Assumed Area of Track = 200 square feet Note: 1 U.S. ton = 2,000 pounds = 2,000 lbs. 410,000 lbs / 200 square feet = 2,050 psf There's a start, now you just need to find out how much it actually weighs and how long and wide the tracks are to get the area of the track on the ground. I hope that answers the question you were asking.

Origami cranes are simply pieces of paper that are folded to resemble birds; no matter how many you make, they will not take on supernatural abilities such as wish-granting.
