Q: I have a compaq presario nb.(raising my hand) computer idiot here.: Memory Card readers (for such devices as digital cameras, mp3 players, etc) come in many standards. Most modern computers have USB ports on both the front and back of the basic unit. These are the rectangular ports that have the three-pronged USB symbol on them. Some computers have flash card readers on them as well. The ones I've seen are located on the front of the case, sometimes behind an access panel. Q: I just want to update firmware on my 7D, but I don't know if i can do it without card reader?Thanks for responses :): If you can setup the camera to think it's a hard drive then you should be able to extract the new firmware onto the drive that's really the camera. Update from there! Of course a few cameras won't allow you to save stuff to their cards via a USB, in which case you'll need to spend a couple of dollars on a card reader!

Q: I have a Canon EOS 7D, so it uses a 8GB CF card. When I plugged it in my card reader (in a MacBook) together with a SD card of a friend of mine, I noticed that the SD card had a virus. When I opened my card, all of my pictures were gone. When I scanned my CF card on a Windows laptop, it says that the CF card had no virus. So I used my camera again with the same CF card. When I plugged it in my Windows laptop, I scanned it again, with no virus. When I opened it, I can't see my pictures anywhere (even with see hidden files enabled), but the CF card's properties shows that my CF card has half free space. I am suspecting my card reader is infected. Help?: Your card reader cannot get virus infected. It does not have memory to become infected. If you don't really need the photos stored on the card, format it. It should get your memory card working properly again. If you need your photos you might need to use some data recovery software before you format the card.
