- Q: Ok, the builder and an independent foundation company both say that no foundation damage happened, just some settlement. What should I do with these cracks on tiles and on walls. Would leaving them alone cause any problem? When and how should I fix those?
- Cracked tiles, if there are no sharp edges won t cause a problem but should be fixed if you have spare tiles. Wall s you don t describe exactly what type of crack so no one can help there to much.. If its the wall board thats cracked that can be a big job. If its a corner crack there are a couple ways to do this. Tiles ( if you have or can get extra) can be pulled out, the area cleaned and tiles put back in. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL .
- Q: Someone spilled a cleaning liquid on my marble tiles and the glaze came off. Does anyone know how to get the shine back to normal. Right now some parts look regular, and other parts are white. With a certain angle you can clearly see the glaze is taken off.

- Q: I have really old honeycomb tile in my bathroom and it would be extremely difficult to remove it. The surface is pretty flat .Would ceramic tile work best , or something like self stick vinyl tiles?
- for the wall you could--if the existing tile surface is sound and free of cracks and mold. wash it very thoroughly first with TSP. if its the floor your talking about, i definitely wouldnt go over old tile--it should come out before the new goes on. ive seen too many times where a new tile floor begins to crack because it has an un-level substrate.
- Q: We‘re renovating an old house, and the ceramic tile on the bathroom walls is just awful. I‘d like to replace the wall tile with beadboard. The tiles appear to be mortared directly onto the drywall. Is it a good idea to install the beadboard directly over the ceramic tile? Or should we chip of the tile or remove the lower portion of the drywall? I‘d like to do this as easily as possible, but not at the risk of shoddy workmanship. Also - all the beadboards I‘ve looked at are either painted or primed on the front surface, with a bare wood surface on the rear (glued to the wall). Is it advisable to paint/prime the rear surface as well before installation? With all the steam and moisture in a bathroom, I can envision the panels buckling. Is there a particular paint/primer that seals off from moisture particularly well?
- It's better to remove the tile altogether, including the old backer board. We did that as insurance, we found there was no insulation in the wall so it was good that we did. Cover the entire wall with sheetrock (green board, meant for a wet location) then glue the beadboard in place with water proof adhesive (applied with a caulk gun). It's worth the extra time and effort for your own house and you'll know it's done correctly and will last for many years to come. Good luck, been there done that and still in the process. It's a labor of love, I guess! :o)
- Q: The tile is one week old. I have had the company pull tiles, regrout and patch. I have new cracks every day. Can I reasonable ask them to start over?
- It is possible bad mortar was the problem, but my money is on human error. Too little mortar or too few screws in the cement board are common culprits. I would have someone who knows about laying tile(other than the installers) take a look at it and offer up some probable causes. Good luck.
- Q: What is the double tiles of tiles? How to distinguish polished tiles from the surface and throw glazed tiles. What is the thickness of each? What kind of microcrystalline stone?
- 5, different wear resistance Throwing glazed tiles is polished brick surface added a layer of glaze, compared to the brightness is good, good sense of permeability, but the degree of wear is not as polished tiles. Polished tiles on the surface is very thick crystal, more wearable, and throwing glazed tiles on the surface layer is glaze, very thin, wear resistance is not so strong. ? 6, different stain resistance Polished tiles are suitable for use in most of the interior space except the toilet, outside the kitchen, but the polished bricks left in the production of the bump pores, these pores will be filth, causing the surface is easy to penetrate the pollutants, and even some tea poured Polished tiles are back to the days of weakness, and throwing glazed tiles anti-pollution effect, but far more than polished tiles. ? 7, the price is different The glacier brick has a high degree of simulation. It combines the advantages of antique tiles and polished tiles. It is polished on the basis of glazed tiles. The process is more complicated than polished tiles. The appearance is rich in glazed tiles and polished The bricks are bright and clean, so the price is more expensive than polished tiles. Microcrystalline stone in the line called glass-ceramic composite sheet, is a layer of 3-5mm glass-ceramic composite ceramic glass fossil surface, after the second sintering completely integrated high-tech products. Glass-ceramic composite panel thickness of 13-18mm, gloss greater than 95. Microcrystalline stone as a new building materials, gradually into the people of the family, according to the microcrystalline stone raw materials and production process, you can put three kinds of microcrystalline stone: nonporous microcrystalline stone, quintana microcrystalline stone, composite microcrystalline stone.
- Q: Currently the stairs are carpeted. I have heard that if this is not done properly the tiles will crack. How do I ensure that the stairs are level and stable enough for the tiles? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
- don't , they are way to slippery, accidents waiting to happen!
- Q: If I start in the middle, I will have to cut tile for both sides. I think I should start in the upper right corner, but my neighbor seems to think it will look out of balance.
- When laying tiles always start with perfectly orthogonal lines intersecting in the center of your space. That's where you begin laying the tiles. The smaller the space, the more any imperfection will show.
- Q: I almost bought porcelin tile but I know ceramic tile is much more popular, what about the endurance factor between the two? I want to get something that will last and still look good.Does anyone know about flooring, and could tell me which is best?
- Porcelain is a more dense tile with less water absorption. I prefer porcelain over ceramic. In most cases when/if you get a chip in porcelain it is much more noticeable. In any case, your taste will most likely determine your choice. However, tile has ratings, i.e., 1 thru 5. 1 being less durable and 5 being most durable. 1's and 2's would be a wall tile and 3-5 would be a floor tile. Ask your supplier when you see something you like. If he doesn't know, go somewhere else.
- Q: please be descriptive.........
- Any tile can chip and or crack if an object is dropped on it . But this depends mostly on the quality of the tile and what the tile body and glazing is made of. Some true porcelains are very hard and if they do chip the color goes all the way through the tile body so the chip is barely noticeable. Some older red bodied tile can chip the same way but is very noticeable because the red body shows through. Most average tiles made today are of the white bodied or a porcelain body. Must harder and chip resistant than the old red bodied tiles. To help judge a tiles hardness they are rated in a scale of 1/10. Called a MOHS scale. Any object such as a pc or silverware or a can edge when dropped can top chip a tile. A poor installation or under supported tile the whole tile can crack. High glaze or some times called a bright glaze can chip very easily because these glazes are not usually the best. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.
