- Q: I‘m curious...How are Terra Cotta roof tiles secured to the roof?? It seems that if they were nailed down, the installer would risk the chance of cracking, or shattering the tile..Is there some type of nail set that prohibits driving the fastener too far into the pieces? Obviously, they just don‘t lie there...
- here in the uk we dont use shingles ..not man enough to last ..so we have clay . ncrete ..and terra cotta roof tiles ...no point in putting on a roof covering unless it gonna last at least 100 years ..out roof tiles have hooks at top that sit behind the tile lathe ...most tiles are not actually nailed ..most are every 3 or 5 rows ..i have worked on dozens of roofs where not one was nailed ..the roof angles and tile weight prevent them from moving ..we fix with either galvanised or copper nails
- Q: Would they be easy to remove and not damage the floor (ugly linoleum) when I have to move out at the end of the year?
- no the damage would be hreat every thing would have to be removed down to the bare wood. thats what peel and stick tiles do STICK.
- Q: We currently have carpet throughout our house, but due to having dogs, we hate the carpet. While hardwood or laminate seems the logical choice, tile would hold up much better to their toe nails. My concern is how having tile throughout the entire house (even in the living room, computer room, bedrooms, etc) would look. I know it is done sometimes, but I just can't picture it in my mind. How do you feel about it? Would the tile (it would be very neutral in color) be okay through the entire house or should we go with laminate deal with the scratches when/if they happen?

- I tile every day of my life, and usually hang out in DIY. Tile spacers come in two sizes, 1/4 and 1/8. For a counter top I suggest 1/8. You already know they look like (+) signs, and many have rounded tips. They are also sold in what looks like a round CAP with the plus sign under that allows for corner spacing and alignment. I do not use corners specifically, in laying the spacer flat, primarily through experience, but many suggest that method. You would set a piece of tile, then another in close proximety, using the spacers to align and keep the tiles at an exatc distance from each other. The spacer also makes a great scoop for wiping out excess mortar or mastic that squeezes up into the grout lines. I suggest 1/8 for countertops because of the purpose of the top and having the least amount of absorbent material, against the greater flat/flush surface that a counter top should be. Without knowing at all, your tile, or design, I also prefer a tile style that has bullnose sold in the same style allowing a back splash, and counter top edge/facing. I can't recall the name of REVERSE bullnose, but it would be used where the countertop, butts/meets the back splash. You may get suggestions that ramble, as I am, about sealing the grout, and you should be using a poly blend mortar and grout anyway. I'm not strictly opposed to sealers, but they do become a regular, life long process, and I am opposed to any surface finishes that come in contact with food. Obviously cutting boards work. - Q: can I surface over my white tile flooring granet??
- If they are vinyl tiles stuck to the subfloor and you put another substrate, such as 1/2 cement board, yes you can. If the vinyl tiles are over another type subfloor, such as luan, then no, the vinyl and its substrate must come up and then the proper subflooring put down over the subfloor, correctly and then tile. If its a self stick tile, over slab, it must come up. If its a glued down vinyl tile over slab and bonded well, there are proper ways to put ceramic over this. If your doing ceramic over ceramic, and the ceramic is down well and no signs of cracks or loose tiles, again there are proper ways of putting ceramic ( or granite) over ceramic. - Q: What are the benefits of installing tile in kitchen and bathroom or would linoleum be better? Also, how hard is it to install tile floors. I‘ve had friends who‘ve had no experience and they did it and did a good job. I am just a bit skeptical of doing it myself but just wondered if there are videos out there that shows you how to do it.
- Tile looks soooo much nicer and it is durable and easy to care for. I tiled my kitchen countertops and backsplash and small bathroom floor. It really is easy. Home Depot and Lowe's has a free class. You don't need to buy a video. There are plenty of websites with good instructions and pictures. A few tips...the hardest parts are the initial planning and if doing the bathroom, removing the toilet. I drew my floor to scale, one foot equals one inch on paper (if you are using the standard 12 tiles. Take a piece of wax paper and draw one inch grid large enough to cover the drawing of your room. It is pretty good in showing you how the tiles will fit. The pencil lines are your grout lines. Also, buy a few tiles and lay them out to be sure of your design. It really isn't hard and to looks so good when you are finished. Just take your time.

- Hydrochloic acid to about a 4 parts water 1 part acid may do it. Test it on a piece or not seen tile first. Paint on with a brush first, leave for about 10 mins then wire brush of. Other name is spirits of salts. Commonly used as a flux for soldering galvanised iron. USE FACE MASK VISOR TYPE AND COMMERCIAL GRADE RUBBER GLOVES. Wear an old pair of overalls or old clothes. If the acid gets on them they are history. Thorougly hose off with cold water when finished
- Q: We currently have vinly tile in our tiny kitchen. We want to upgrade but want something that looks nice and is easy to install. What would you recommend (not wood)? Also, would we have to take up the vinyl floor tiles or install on top of it?
- I once had a laminate flooring installed in my kitchen. It was about 16 square and looked like terra cotta tile. It was shaded where the grout was printed on the laminate. So, it looked like real tile. When they installed it, they didn't remove any of the old flooring. They just lay a sheet of thin foam rubber backing and installed the laminate squares (they had a tongue-and-groove interlocking). It came out great and cost about $6 a square foot installed. But, it's easy enough to do yourself. A friend of mine does tile and couldn't believe it wasn't real tile (he had to actually feel it to prove it to himself).
- Q: We grouted the tile, and also had a border tile up.. the border is decorative and has some texture to it.We did wipe off the excess as we grouted. The next day tho, my brother sealed it, before making sure all the dust was off.. now there is some grout dust sealed onto the border tile. I scrubbed with a toothbrush, and managed to get some of it off.. but not all.Is there anything I can do to remove the grout, or even the seal, without ruining the finish on the tile??
- If the dust is right on the surface of the tile, use an acid to remove it such as CLR purchased at your grocer or white vinegar, which if the grout dust is thin, will also dissolve it. The layer of silicone sealant is so thin that the CLR or white vinegar will penetrate it easily and the grout will dissolve. The surface of the tile will not be attacked by CLR or white vinegar. If the dust in in the grout or if the grout is uneven, Dust, or even imperfections such as ridges, can easily be smoothed out in tile grout. Take a sheet of 120 grit sand paper and fold it back several times until it forms a rounded edge suitable to sand on the tile grouting. Sand out the dust or imperfections with that sand paper. This is commonly done in tiling installations where some imperfection is present. You can either leave as is after sanding or reskim a coat of grout over and then reseal.
