- Q: I was reading about the Colt 38 Super Custom and it said it's optional between a carbon steel frame or a stainless steel frame. What is the difference? There is also a choice between aluminium or stainless steel hammers and triggers can you also tell me the difference between them please?
- If your talking about a folding pocket knife, I think that it's basically six one way and a half dozen the other. I actually do prefer stainless for my pocket knives. I don't want to oil a knife to the degree I feel carbon requires, only to then stick it my pocket to attract dirt to the knife and oil to my pants. I'm the exact opposite on sheath knives though. I like 1095 carbon steel, plain edge sheath knives. I'll thrash on them HARD, and I rarely have major edge problems. Of course, I require them to be coated with some kind of powder coat or the like, because they can rust, but I do try and keep them clean and dry when in the sheath, so they won't pit the uncoated edge. My reasons for this sheath knife preference is multi-fold. First, these knives are simply affordable. I don't spend $80 dollars on a outdoors sheath knife. I use the tool too hard to want to spend more. I don't like the more traditional stainless steels such as AUS-8, 420HC, and 440C (not to mention the HORRENDOUS 440A) because I feel that the all else being equal, a stainless blade will bend before a carbon blade will break. I also think that carbon holds an edge at least as well, if not better, than traditional stainless, and it's much easier to hone. I don't know much about these new laminates, other than the very hard, but not so tough. They seem to be POSSIBLY too brittle for my use. That, combined with the fact that they cost a FORTUNE, means that I just won't be considering them.
- Q: How do you calculate the weight of a steel coil?
- To calculate the weight of a steel coil, you need to know its dimensions and the specific gravity of the steel. The formula to calculate the weight is as follows: Weight of steel coil = Length of coil (in meters) x Width of coil (in meters) x Thickness of coil (in meters) x Specific gravity of steel First, measure the length, width, and thickness of the steel coil in meters. Ensure that all measurements are in the same unit for accurate calculations. Next, determine the specific gravity of the steel. Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance compared to the density of water. For steel, the specific gravity is typically around 7.8. Multiply the length, width, and thickness of the coil together. This will give you the volume of the steel coil in cubic meters. Finally, multiply the volume of the coil by the specific gravity of steel to obtain the weight of the steel coil in kilograms (kg). Keep in mind that this calculation provides the weight of the steel coil without considering any additional factors such as the core material or any other components included in the coil.
- Q: What are the different types of steel coil cutting methods?
- There are several different types of steel coil cutting methods, including slitting, shearing, and laser cutting. Slitting involves cutting the coil into narrower strips using rotating circular knives. Shearing is the process of cutting the coil using straight blades to create straight edges. Laser cutting uses a focused laser beam to melt and vaporize the steel, resulting in a precise and clean cut.
- Q: I want to get a new knife but i cant decide if i wan a spyderco pacific salt or a cold steel ak47
- What exactly are you using it for? Personally I would go with Cold Steel AK47. It's a good all around knife for hunting, combat, stabbing and slashing as well as everyday use. Well balanced tip and very little bladeplay which can be a problem with a cheaper knife. Both are good companies but the CS AK47 wins hands down for me.
- Q: How can I tell the wear resistance, strength, ect from the name of the steel?how could I tell the difference between 420 and 440 steel. what does the HC in 420 HC steel mean? what do the numbers and letters in s30v steel mean?
- Larry gave a good answer. As for the HC, it means High Carbon.
- Q: How are steel coils inspected for impact resistance using impact testers?
- Steel coils are inspected for impact resistance using impact testers by subjecting them to controlled impacts of varying force and measuring the resulting deformation or damage. The testers typically consist of a pendulum or a falling weight that strikes the surface of the coil, simulating real-life impacts. The force and velocity of the impact can be adjusted as per the testing requirements. The extent of deformation or damage is then visually assessed or measured using specialized equipment, providing valuable information about the coil's ability to withstand impacts and potential performance in real-world applications.
- Q: What are the common coil widths and thickness combinations available for steel coils?
- Common coil widths for steel coils range from 600mm to 2000mm, while common thickness combinations vary from 0.4mm to 3.0mm.
- Q: Two different shaving razors I'm looking to buy have different specs. in terms of the metals used for the blade; one being 1045 surgical stainless steel, the other 440 stainless (not sure if its A B or C, but probably 440A or 440B because it's not specified). So which one is better for the intended use as a shaving razor?
- Type 440 combines such a high grade of cutlery steel, toughness and economy that it is actually known as razor blade steel. Browsing around (a lot) more, it seems that 1045 Surgical Steel is popular in straight razors used by barbers. These razors are honed by stropping with leather and last practically forever. From the above, I would guess that it might be easier to lose the edge on 1045, but also easier to re-sharpen it, that it won't easily knick because probably not so hard as 440. I'm not sure if it would be more expensive, unless it has a superior handle etc. So, I would expect to spend a little more effort over the lifetime of the 1045, maybe pay a little more for it, but have a longer lifetime. hth.
- Q: How do steel coils contribute to the oil and gas industry?
- Steel coils are an essential component in the oil and gas industry as they are used to manufacture various equipment and structures like pipelines, storage tanks, and drilling rigs. These coils provide the necessary strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion required for the harsh operating conditions in the industry. Additionally, steel coils are crucial in the transportation of oil and gas as they are used in the construction of tankers and pipelines, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of these valuable resources.
- Q: What is the standard diameter of steel coils?
- Depending on the industry and application, the standard diameter of steel coils may differ. Generally, steel coils have a standard diameter that falls between 24 inches and 72 inches. This range enables convenient handling, transportation, and storage of the coils. It is worth mentioning that various industries may impose specific requirements for steel coil diameters, taking into account factors like equipment compatibility, production processes, and logistical considerations.
