THe pack is indivisible and can only be used as a unit with those characteristics, ie capable of a constant 4.4 A output for 1 hour, half that ouput for double the time, 0.44 A for 10 hrs etc. These are nominal figures, so expect to get less, depending on the age of the pack in terms of charging cycles.

- You say it won't hold a charge - do you mean that it holds charge for a very short time? As in after you charge it, the radio or whatever dies in a minute or so? If so, I've had some success charging the battery, then putting it in a flashlight and letting it die, over and over. Each time, the recharge lasts longer. - Those are Li-ion batteries which is the cream of the crop these days. They last the longest. You could buy an extra set of batteries if you are a heavy user. I've even seen a battery pack adapter that uses AA batteries but I'm not sure about it's efficiency.

- Batteries in series add their voltage. Batteries in parallel add their current capability. By hooking both lighting systems to one battery pack you are going to drain the batteries faster. The concept of 6 AA batteries I would use 3 D size batteries if I was working with lighting so the battery would last longer and if I used rechargeable batteries, I wouldn't have to recharge them as often.
