- Q: I just bought a Canon 50D, and i've heard from many people on how long the first charge should be. I'm confused but do not want to try and end up spoiling the battery. - Q: Hi, I picked up a used laptop but it didn't come with a battery pack, so I'm wondering if I buy a charger for it, if it would turn on or would I need the battery inside there? It's a older model of the Gateway laptops.
- You should check the owners manual to be sure particularly for older models. That can generally be found on line on the Gateway website for the particular model you have. In general, for most laptops, it presents no problem. Many manufactures recommend if you are using the electrical outlet and charger, to take the battery out. I don't know for yours in particular because you did not specify the model. If your computers motherboard is OK. than it should work. In some cases, because the battery wires are made in China and the materials and workmanship are so poor, users coil the cable and the wires crack and eventually break. This can cause intermittent power interruption. If that happens enough, it can adversely affect the motherboard, to the point it shorts out in various ways. Before buying one, I would suggest having a local computer repair shop and asking them to use a power they have to see if the laptop works and powers on. That way you can avoid rolling the dice and taking a chance in sending good money on a bad computer. I hope that helps.

- Commonly the amp-hr rating of a battery is at a 20hr discharge rate ( 0.25A or 3W for a 12V, 5Ah battery) and capacity tends to be less at a higher discharge rate. Also it is bad for a rechargeable battery to completely discharge it, so 2 or 3 hours might be realistic.

- You've just learned why it is not a great idea to have an electric snow shovel. That power cord is a dang nuisance! The answer to your question is not quite no. There ARE rechargeable battery devices that will supply 110VAC to operate your snow shovel; but they are heavy and not intended to be carried around. They are for emergency use of 110 VAC appliances where there is no available AC outlet. You can find them in Auto Supply stores and truck stops. They typically have both heavy-duty battery clips to connect to a car battery, as well as a standard AC power cord. This way the batteries can be charged up on the road or in a dwelling. The batteries themselves are small versions of car batteries; and as you know, they are not light. Add in the transformer to up-convert the voltage, and you've got a rather heavy device to lug around. As you might guess, this is an impractical way to operate your electric snow shovel.

- If you put a 10.8v battery in there, you will wreck every internal gear that there is to wreck, that is way too strong for a stock gun, especially a clone brand. Stick with the 8.4v, or whatever battery came with it, otherwise your friend has just lost a large investment

- The batteries have a LOT of power in them and can explode or take out your face or a finger if you do anything wrong. some of my friends in the EV trade have experienced this. Safety is the biggest issue, and Lead battery safety cant be explained in an answers format. sorry

- Maybe. The Honda IMA batteries are not the most dependable things, and changes Honda made to the battery usage profiles to improve battery life made the fuel economy drop so much there was a class action suit against Honda that was only recently settled. I am not surprised the battery system is out of whack after sitting that long, though. Within a week or two you will know whether it is serious about it or not.

- I wouldn't bother buying a second battery at this stage, because the battery that comes supplied with it will allow up to 340 shots per charge (which is a lot more than what other batteries provide). I'm not sure of how many times a battery can be charged, but it would be quite a large number of times. However, the real downside to this battery, is that it takes a very long 4.5 hours to fully charge it. But, you CAN buy a 1.5 hour, fast charger (which is an extra and expensive cost). Another very clever marketing idea from Sony, of course. If I were you, I would just use the one battery and takes steps to conserve it's life by turning off the LCD screen in-between shots, limit how long you review your images, and also limit your use of the flash. You can also turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder instead to compose your shots. Doing this, will give you lots more battery life. And make sure you give the battery a top up charge as often as possible. You don't have to wait for the battery to fully drain before you re-charge it.
